I thought my Nest thermostat was defective. Everything installed without a hitch, but for some reason it didn’t recognize when I was near it, a function that was supposed to be standard, and part of the reason I bought the more expensive version.
As it turns out, there was a little tab over the sensors that perfectly blended in with the thermostat itself. I’m not sure why it was there, unless there are people paranoid about their thermostat ‘watching’ them. Once I peeled that thing off it started working like it should. It would have been embarrassing to send it in for a warranty claim when it was just something so incredibly simple. Given that the unit comes with that big plastic cover, I have no idea what that little tab is for.

I would imagine it was there to protect the sensors from scratches and the like during shipping and installation.

But that's what the big plastic thingy is for. Why bother with such a small tab on a limited area? The front is all covered by the same material.
