Looks like an anti- theft device. Does the cable stretched to the shift lever serve a purpose? Oakland. Jack London Square.

Probably to make it clear it has a disc lock and discourage anyone trying to move it.

T hey’re ok theft deterrents. Better than doing nothing for short stints, but not a perfect solution to protect it over night.

Cable is just there as a remind for the rider, yes.

T hey’re advertised as a reminder for the rider and disc locks won’t discourage a bike thief with a truck, unfortunately. But they do stop people frommore easily  rolling it away

Yes, anti theft and reminder. You more usually see the cable attached to the handlebars.

Though there’s always value in letting something else be the easier target.

Like the old joke, if you and I are being chased by a bear, I don’t have to outrun the bear. I just have to outrun you .

Nothing is worse than trying to ride off with a disk lock attached. I did it once, and ripped off a speedometer cable. I also almost dropped the bike because I had the forks turned. It’s also kinda embarrassing .

You attach the cable to a control so you don’t forget to remove it. It’s most often used on the front disk, and the cable attaches to the brake lever or one of the grips.

If you don’t use it all the time, it’s nice to have a reminder when you do.

Here’s mine.
