Its a 1997, automatic, with 165k on the clock. It runs surprisingly well but needs a battery and some maintenance. The trans shudders sometimes, I’m hoping a service will take care of that. It needs shocks or swaybar endlinks or something cause it clunks a lot.
The interior is rough - faded, seats thrashed, shifter uas chunks of rubber coating missing. But the power things (window, sunroof, mirrors) all work. Actually, Im really excited, this is my 8th car, and its the first one with a sunroof.
The body is surprisingly straight for a DC car and the paint is pretty good. I think it will shine pretty nice with a good Svending. I do need to do something about the trim though.
I’m pretty excited about this and I got a fine deal on it. I got it from a coworker who wanted to get rid of it because she and her husband have 4 other cars - Impreza, Mini Cooper S, Mustang, and a DeLorean!
So there you have it Oppo, the newest member of the stable. Please, AMA.

Very cool! Always loved the shade of green on that series of Volvos!
Transmission shudder could just be low fluid? Did you check it?

No. Apparently its had like no service ever done to it. My plan is to tear into it tomorrow, I'll see if its low and add some if needed. Otherwise, I'm going to drain a quart and add a quart, drive it a bit, and then repeat a couple times.

I got half a way through reading and thought, ‘I need to clean that and restore the trim’.
I've got just the product for it, Gtechniq C4.

Ye', Gtechniq C4, will last about two years. it's not cheap but it does go a long way and can be used on wheels and paint.

I dunno, never had one before. But I’ ve always liked them in rentals, friends cars, etc. I know its a silly thing but for me its kind of fun.

I guess the spring seats are know for going out in the front, so that might be part of your weird suspension noises. IIRC the new parts are a lot more robust or you can grab them off a similar gen XC60 and they’ll last forever... but it has been a minute since I’ve researched it.

Thanks for the info! I need to do a bit of research myself but I was curious what was cross compatible. Right now my immediate concern is drivetrain, and then Ill have a look at the suspension and seats. Maybe Ill do seats first since they are relatively cheap and easy and may cure some of my noises.

Uhh... arent you from eastern PA? Because so is the young lady I bought it from. And I think it was her first car.

For the transmission shudder, start with changing the transmission fluid and follow the specific steps for checking the fluid level as outlined in this video:
Also, read this thread:

I am, haha. Did her dad buy it new and hand it off to her? If so, yikes haha. In all seriousness I doubt the car is still in the family. I graduated in 2003 (so did she)

Weird, that sounds like the same story, but shes a bit younger. I think she graduated around 2009.

Fortunately the autos are fairly robust, but, change the fluid first, let the old fluid settle and check for debris! I think the only thing I’ve ever replaced was a valve body, other than basic maintenance. The auto in my old turbo wagon held up to 22 psi like a champ, it had well over 200,000 miles on it, broken odometer gear, when I cranked the boost.

They are why I got out of Volvo’ s ;) After spending almost 8k in one sitting I had to rethink my priorities. But that s60 R was quick, bordering on fast at that point.

I had my mind on something else and somehow misinterpreted spring seats as something to do with actual seats. It does need seats, the current ones are total trash, but also it probably does need spring seats. My Cruze makes similar clunky noises and I know it needs spring seats.

8k.... wow! Im trying hard not to sink 800 into this thing.
Though if Im honest I should do the full tune up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, filters, etc), a timing belt (plus water & oil pumps), and shocks. Plus at the minimum a trans flush, preferably a full service with filter. Im sure that's easily $800 there. Then it needs front seats and several other trim bits, so Im sure at least $100 at the junkyard.

I will when I can drive it. Unfortunately I got called away for work and am in Alaska for the next 2 weeks. I will do a trans service when I get home and see how she goes. Maybe I can get the Mrs. to ride with me and snap some pictures of my glorious locks flowing in the wind!

I need to check those, when I went to look at the car it hadn’t run in a few months. When we got it started it shuddered, the motor was hopping around, and it also had a tick up top. I think it was a stuck lifter + trans, but I was a bit worried about motor mounts.
Im going to do the trans first and see what happens, then go from there.
