The two rear bearings I ordered showed up on Wednesday. I replaced the Driver’s side in about 40 minutes and took the car for a spin. It was quieter, but still loud. I did the passenger side in another 40 minutes and took it for another spin. Quiet as can be. So quiet I can hear a new squeak around the rear shock area.
Note to anyone who has a CX5 and wants to do the bearings themselves: You need 21mm to remove the lug nuts, 32 mm to do the axle nut, and 14 mm to remove the brake caliper slides and bracket, and 14mm to remove the hub mounting bolts. Plus a mini BFH(ammer) to knock the hub free once it’s unbolted. That’s it. If you have an air ratchet or an electric ratchet it will be even faster than 40 minutes per side. I was very pleasantly surprised at how easily they were able to be removed.

Two wheel bearings already bad in a five year old car? How many miles?

That’s about how easy the hub unit bearings on a newer Subaru are. Add some extra time for north east rust and you’re set.
I helped someone with press-in wheel bearings on an older Subaru last weekend. I’m borderline never again on that task...

I am northeast, but they weren’t rusted too badly yet.

83,000 miles give or take.

The ones I did were about 5 years beyond where yours were rust-wise. Still, not a terrible task.

This was my thought exactly. I’ve replaced one wheel bearing on my 1992, which ended up getting moisture and rusting from sitting. I finally replaced them all on my 1994 at 230k miles.....

Good to know, thanks! My wife’s 2015 CX-5 still only had like 14k miles on it, so I’m sure it will be a while before I need to deal with this.

When I looked at the threads that were exposed beyond the flange I thought for sure they were going to be a bear to do. I was pleasantly surprised.

The fronts are still good. I’m thinking it has a lot to do with modern bearing quality. Sure, they could make them last a lot longer, but the cost cutting that is forced by accounting is brutal. Ever notice you can’t find lifetime warranty wheel bearings anymore?

For me it wasn’t the bolts, but the bearing assembly welded by rust to the hub.

Mine was really stuck. I hit it with progressively larger hammers side to side, until it came off.
