Actually, I know how. But dammit it all to hell.
While attempting to leave this parking lot, I managed to drive right into a well camou flaged hole. Besides the expected yet still unsettling noise from the car, I heard a loud bang above me. Did a quick check to make sure the bike was still there . Wasn’t until I looked at it from the front did I realize the crossbar itself was bent.
Being a long ways from home, and worried it might crack, I concocted a plan.
Found a little hardware store and got two steel flat bars and some gorilla tape.
First I bent the crossbar back into shape as best I could by propping it on this root and stomping on it.
Then there was the trimming down of the flat bar. The hardware store wouldn’t do it for me so I had to buy a hacksaw and do it myself.
I stacked the two bars and shoved them inside the crossbar and then gorilla taped the entire section. Figured even if the aluminum cracked then it shouldn’t come apart.
Held up quite nicely. Got my bike home at least.
Ordered a new set, but I’m not doing any riding right away anyways since the impact also destroyed the front wheel on the bike. -_-

That’s interesting; I just noticed one of my coworkers has a Subaru Ascent with a bent front crossbar. I wonder if the same thing happened to it, and it got bent by hitting a bump while loaded. That seems like a terrible design if it can happen at well below the rated capacity.

Thought it could have been a very heavy bird, or squirrel that sat on it.

Wow, the impact bent the crossbar and damaged the wheel on the bike, but not the car?!

Those aerobars are really flimsy. My Forester came with a set that mounted to the roof rails; you could bend them over your knee. I now run a set of Yakima round bars. Much better.

That would’ve made more sense.

The guy at the dealer had never heard of it happening.

Yakima rounds are noisy and heavy but they are pretty darn though.

Heavy? Yes. Noisy? 2009 Forester is already noisy. What’s a bit more noise?
Combined with the panoramic moonroof, I have my own pull-up bar. Unfortunately I exceed the weight limit of the rails these days (Subaru says 175lbs).
I mainly use them to carry a 20lb canoe these days. Go figure.

Does the bike not fit inside? I understand not wanting to remove wheels to fit, but in a situation like this, seems like it could’ve been a solution.

hey, If I can hear them over the cruiser...
but yeah, with a fairing they aren’t too bad.

Most factory crossbars are extruded aluminum, for corrosion reasons and because it typically doesn’t bend easily but when it does it’ll crack.
That looks like fairly thin walled steel of some sort.
Sucks dude but good MacGyver job.

No fairing here! Oh, I still hear them above the general noise, but it’s just added noise rather than a stark contrast from quiet. The whistling doesn’t get too intrusive until above 70mph anyway.

You ordered another set? hmmm, can you cancel and get Yakimas?
Our Forester carries our 60lb boat no problem, and our skybox loaded before that
- I wouldn’t hesitate to put way more on them.. They do not bend.

I probably could but I’m gonna stick with them for now. If by some hex upon me it happens again, I’d probably go Thule cause my bro ther gets a decent discount.

Normally it would if I took the front wheel off, but I was on a trip and was gonna have to load the car up.
I still could’ve probably tetrised it in there if I had to.

I figured “items in the back” was a most likely reason, but the MacGuyver solution works to, while keeping hatch space usable. Good field engineering.

That’s a resourceful A-Team looking fix, I don’t think I would or could have come up with that.
