Hello all, as with most of my automotive life, as soon as I get close to having two fully working vehicles, one decides to have a problem.

My 2014 CX5 Touring AWD has a pretty loud wheel bearing noise and it’s getting loud enough that I can’t mask it with the radio anymore.

I jacked each corner up and checked for play in the bearings and saw nothing. I also did the back of my hand test on the wheel hubs after a long drive to see if any of them were hotter than the others. No noticible difference. I might try the thermal camera I have kicking around.

I didn’t feel any grinding or anything like that when I tried turning the wheels by hand.

Anyone have a foolproof method?  Note: the noise goes away when I turn right.

I had this problem with my S80.  Eventually I asked my friend to stoop close to each wheel and listen as I idled around a parking lot.

One method I heard but haven’t tried. Jack up the car, spin the tire and put  your finger gently on the spring.

It sounds to me like you decided it was a wheel bearing and all the evidence suggests it isn’t. Maybe a CV joint? It could be as simple as a stone wedged between your caliper and the rotor which sounds like hell too.

What’s the noise and do you hear it in reverse?

Note: the noise goes away when I turn right.

That suggests the bad bearing is on the right side. Turning right loads the left side and unloads the right.

Generally not a bad idea to replace both sides at the same time.  Often when one side goes bad, the other isn’t far behind.

CV joints usually make a clicking noise and are noisy at low speeds. This isn’t noisy until higher speeds. No clicking.

A stone between the caliper bracket and rotor would leave a polished spot and I haven’t noticed that. I also know that sound pretty well. It’s not that.

It almost sounds like the engine is revving but not shifting, but it clearly is shifting.

Wouldn’t a Right hand turn load the right?  as the body weight sways that direction?

The fact that the noise changes when turning is enough, I think. Gently “swerving” a vehicle from side to sid e at speed is a method that I’ve used to diagnose wheel bearings.

I wouldn’t worry too much about trying to figure out which bearing it is, though. If one is bad, there’s a good chance that the other side is just as old and just as worn. Replacing one bearing m ight just quiet the car enough for you to hear the other one making noise...

Load moves to the outside of the turn.  The driver’s side tire does most of the work making the car turn right.

I ordered both rears as they were on closeout and had 2 left.  Next paycheck I’m ordering the fronts.  Might as well do it up.  I was just trying to quiet it down for a couple weeks while I let someone borrow it while they are on vacation.

Or s tick a gopro at each corner in turn and check the sound that way? If you don’t have an action cam lying around you might make do with an old phone taped to the fender with painter’s tape.
