Well, you’d think I wouldn’t have missed that one. Oops.
That Mad Dog is going to be history soon.

I regret to inform you (and me) that my next flight will be on United rather than Delta. Google Flights showed me a really good Delta flight, but it was like $25 0 more on the Delta site than what flights was listing (Google said to book through a travel agent, which... hahaha no.) It’s a pity, I’d like to fly United less because they are clearly the most shitty of the big three carriers, but I can put up with it to save $100.

What is the plane in the 1st picture, I’m sure I’ve been on one. They always look like they are about to bend in half for some reason too me.

I see the MDs several times a day on the “bus route” from ATL to BHM.
Thankfully my neighborhood is NOT under the takeoff path for the MD. They’re about as loud as the entire Air Force flying at once. We catch them on the downwind/base leg of the landing pattern
pretty regularly, but at low throttle it’s not bad.

The last Mad Dog I flew on had compressor stalls at cruise and got us an emergency landing in Texarkana. Smoke got far enough forward in the engine to make its way briefly into the cabin. Full Autobrake on touchdown was dramatic and almost worth the cost of admission by itself. Overnight in a hotel without luggage because American put our bags on the wrong flight. Christmas. We got a free trip for the family to go visit Ttyymmnn out of that deal.
Did “The Hunters” arrive?

MD-80 or MD-90 (hence Mad Dog). I couldn’t tell you which is which though, ttyymmnn needs to repost his DC-9 family plane spotting guide.

A friend of mine in the a viation leasing business (he’s actually an NYU professor these days) told me they are still used despite their inefficiency because they are all basically fully depreciated at this point, so beyond basic maintenance and fuel they cost very little to own or lease, and selling them wouldn’t net you much more than scrap. At some point though, you figure their life will run out (high engine placement might give them a niche for operations at unimproved airfields?)

American is retiring its last MD-80 on Sept 4 . I’m sure that flight has been sold out for a long time.

Well there’s always the risk that some surly flight attendant will send security after me, but I’m not travelling with a dog, so at least they can’t kill that. They’ve already done a good job nickle and dim ing so they are ahead of the game there (“ standard economy lets you choose your seat? Too bad, you get your pick of middle seats unless you spend $23 per segment to upgrade to preferred zone seating” ).
Honestly though I think the biggest risk is having a somewhat tight connection on the way back, possibly causing me to miss my red-eye flight and have to wait until the next morning (which with the time distance would basically mean losing an entire work day). Probably it will be fine though...

I’m not gonna lie: having experienced 2 separate in- flight JT8D failures (and several significant ground delays) I’m not sad to see these finally on the way to the boneyards.
A friend of mine less so, as he’s looking at a pay cut to move from the right seat of the MD-88 to the 717. He’s holding out till the last one is beer cans.

A lot of us are ready to see them go. They were good planes in their time. MD built good stuff, but their day is past.
With the retirement bubble that we are in I hope your friend will be onward and upward in no time at all.

Due to the new job, I’m starting to have a lov e/hate relationship with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport. On the one hand I love traveling, but on the other hand my husky misses me. And, now I get to train my new service guy that direct flights are awesome. (When customers are paying, don't worry about cost.)
Yay me!

I rather like the airport compared to other large ones I’ve been to. Hanging out in F concourse is key.
