When I bought this house six years ago I had to buy a fridge. I opted for a Samsung RF4267HARS... AKA an fridge. It was big, had ice and water in the door, pull out freezer, beverage drawer, and side by side upper. Everything I wanted.
Aside from random cracking plastics and the slowest ice maker in the world, it has been a good fridge.
Until my last water filter replacement.
When I replaced the filter I could immediately tell something was wrong. The water didn’t cut off cleanly like normal and actually started dripping a little and also had some air in it. Thinking I’d got a bad filter, I replaced it with another from the pack and moved on.
Two weeks later the “flex zone” drawer had frozen everything in it and the drippy issues persisted.
Shit.
A little googling revealed the extent of the problem. Occasioanlly non-Samsung filters will damage the filter housing inside the fridge. This causes the filter housing to leak. Said water runs down the back of the fridge and into the “flex zone” which somehow freaks out the thermostat in there, causing it to go into “ruin all the beer” mode.
Spiffy.
Faced with a $250 repair because I didn’t want to pay $45 for filters every four months , I looked for other options. Apparently the fridge will operate just find without a filter and you can then put any number of aftermarket in-line filters in going to the fridge for a fraction of the cost.
After a little searching I settled on this because a friend recommended it:
$140 and it comes with everything needed to install it. I can live with that!
Install... honestly was easier than I was expecting. I have a work bench in the basement that is right under the fridge. Basically perfect. Only hiccup I ran into was when I was flushing the pre-filters the water just... stopped. Apparently the unit has an automatic cutoff thing that got angry? I dunno. Dispensing water through the fridge got the drain going again, so I’m not going to think about it.
Install is done, but not I have to wait for the tank to fill completely, drain it, and then we should be good to go. Oh and clean up. Everything needs to be cleaned up.

So this is RO and a particulate filter? I’m guessing what was in there was just a particulate filter. The other thing is if you have hard water it will ruin your frig in short order. But the R O should take care of that.

Yeah it has 3 pre filters, the RO thingy, and a post filter. Certainly overkill but meh. Still less than 1 year of Samsung filters.

I really need to find something for my house. I don’t care for the tap water here, and it drives me batty. I can’t bring myself to buy bottled water to drink at home. I’m hopeful a decent filter will make me happier.

Our town is supplied mostly by deep wells into what was once a really clean aquifer. However, there was a Ford plant a town or two over and they did a little dumping which may or may not have left stuff in the water. They say we are good on our hexavalant chromium levels , but I dont trust the overworked under paid ( I assume) person that handles water supply oversight or the NJ EPA . They always notice the major issue ten years too late. For $250 or so plus filters every other year its worth it for piece of mind. Normal carbon filters do not remove that compound but in small amounts RO will. I did a bunch of research a couple of years ago and went with a system from Apec. Looks the same as the OP system but was a little more ex pensive but uses USA made filters and a 3M reverse osmosis unit. I also got the post filter plus the extra one that adds minerals back in as r everse osmosis just leaves pretty pure water which is like distilled water. Here is the website (dumb url but good product) https://www.freedrinkingwater.com/ . I replaced the pre and post filter after 2 year.
When I bought it I got the 3/8 line upgrade and it can fill a glass in 5-6 seconds.
Wow. that turned into a rant fast.

I’m a water treatment plant operator in Ohio myself.
The only contaminate I have any concern with in our water is PFOS/PFOA. I know it hasn’t reached the portion of the aquifer where my cities wells are located yet, but if the state doesn’t release MCL and treatment guidelines next year like they claim the contamination plume will eventually get there. I put it that way because originally it was supposed to happen this year but was pushed back.
I had gone through the water quality reports and data I can grab from the Ohio EPA website before we bought our house.
My issue is that the water is so hard we have to soften it for the sake of our appliances, and I’ve always hated the taste of water after it goes through a home water softener.
I unfortunately have nowhere to put anything bigger than an under sink unit. My utility room is packed fuller than I would like already.

I appreciate the perspective. I ended up with the undersink in by basement to try and save storage space. Unrelated to this post, someone mentioned PFOA in another post when I made a Supra vs C8 joke. https://oppositelock.kinja.com/1837472460
