After waffling back and forth for months, I now no longer own a rusty POS deathtrap. Major problems I encountered:

Exhaust fell off.

Lots of rust (but none on the towers!)

Shift bushings shot.

Gross.

Floor pans a winter away from having holes in them.

Trunk didn’t latch.

Stupid high miles

Iffy clutch cable.

Leaked oil.

Leaked gas.

Seized brake caliper.

No parking brake.

Oh and the steering vagueness?

Yeah, that’s the ball joint. Never going to Brownies Independent in Kettering again.

So, I did what anyone would do.

Took out the seats, rented a steam cleaner, and went to town. Then I pulled off all the good parts that I put on, listed the bitch, and took the first reasonable offer I could get where they would brin g their own wheels.

I now have a set of good wheel in my apartment, plus six wheels with bad tires and three wheels with no tires. And a friend who has a set of bent 4x100 Miata wheels he doesn’t need.

Gaaaah I know! It’s been sitting outside my apartment for a few weeks . I went to start it to start tearing into the overheating issue, but the battery was flat. Time to poke around with a multimeter.

Internet says the first place to start is,coolant temp sensor. If the fans kick on when I unplug it while it runs, it’s that. If not there are other things to check.

When I get the Cabriolet back in town and sort out the issues it has (brake master needs work, either vaccuum related or needs replaced, left turn signal relay is bad, radiator is cracked on top ) want to go for a ride?

Sure! I’ve been thinking about hitting up cars and coffee at Austin Landing soon. Can’t make it tomorrow, but maybe the next one. We could cruise down there.

A shop did that ball joint? The least you can do is leave that photo and a review on their google. That is heinous.

Yeah. They did a general ins0 ection, too, and said it was good but needed brakes. Which apparently means “has a stuck brake piston”.

I’ll try to take it sometime this fall- I haven’t been to C&C, but a few of my buddies go pretty regularly. It goes til October, right?

Also, totally come check out that museum I post about from time to time. Lots of cool stuff there to look at.

I mean, there were plenty of other sketchy things about the car. And it did just feel like bad control arm bushings. But yeah, when I noticed that I had to stand up and walk around my parking lot for a few minutes to stop myself from freaking out. That literally could have killed me on many, many occasions.

sometimes it sucks knowing how truly dangerous stuff like that is, the full implications of a few missing bolts. genuinely terrifying. Also sketchy is one thing, but a “professional” did that. Do you think the bolts backed out or were just never put back to begin with?

Steering was doing the shifting thing since the day I picked it up from the shop. Oh, and the third one (this may have been from twists backing it out) was hand tight, nowhere near torque spec (52 lb-ft I think)

I’m not really one for taking things personally, but it sounds like they didn’t put those bolts back in in the first place. That, I would take personally. But that car is gone now and you will never go back to that shop again so good riddance!

Yeah I believe it goes through October. I think they do a meet at Carillon Park before the Dayton Concours d’Elegance in September. I might try do get over there since it’s close to home.

I definitely need to get to the museum. What is the name again?
