Saw the original series when I was just getting into anime.

6/10. Acted more deep than it was by a long shot. Hope the rereleases and remakes or whatever improved it.

Be sure to check out the movie afterwards (it’s also on Netflix).

That show had some interesting ideas, but holy shit does it get weird.

Nah, no hate. You won’t stop seeing references everywhere & how it shaped the industry after this though. I started it years ago but never got around to finishing it.

Also should check out FLCL by the same studio. Six episode, a killer soundtrack, and some interesting rides show up .

They made FLCL to “let off steam” after the hell that was making  Evangelion.

Strap in and enjoy it. Just know that it's going to turn HARD in the last third of the series or so, so when you hit that lurch, just be ready for the adolescent-depression and self-loathing type feels.

Acted deeper than it was or it was deeper than I could understand?

I assume they’re showing the original series run of 26 episodes? And not “End of Evangelion” which replaces the last two original episodes? If they’re not showing End of Evangelion, you have to track that down.

I liked the entire series a lot. Maybe only because they threw up so many religious references, it’s kept me busy trying to figure out the deeper meaning. And remember this was 1990's and the first (or one of the first) anime deconstructing the mecha genre.

The manga was massively helpful in understanding it. It was much more clear. R eferences and articles at the end of each volume helped a lot. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/anime/neongenesisevangelion helped a lot.

My prevailing memory was all the judeo-christian imagery and terminology that just hit you again and again but....I described it as full of “casual Bible references”. It didn’t go much further than that before diverting and then telling its own stories with the characters and universe. Which, honestly, I en joyed. I hated the discourse around it. I loved the coming-of-age side they gave the main three kids and the additional children have the story a lot of weight. I think they told that part very well as well as telling a nice armageddon/apocalyptic story. Been a while since I saw it but I think the best summary of my feelings is “dragged on way too long and hit you over the head with crosses and biblical references for references sake. Think “big bang theory” but replace ner d references with biblical”.

My Christian friend agrees with “casual Bible references”. I’m assuming there was so much of it, it had to add up to a deeper meaning. Which I haven’t figured out yet.

I learned a lot though. It used a lot of Kabbalah rather than Judeo-Christian references.

It had to have been well thought out. A youtuber pointed out Rei appears briefly at the beginning of the first episode before Shinji ever meets her. It all comes back to the End of Evangelion when she starts appearing everywhere and every time at once.  Something I would never have noticed nor figured out on my own.

Im going to use what you just said as the jumping off point for where I think evangelio n tries too hard.

You made that connection. What does it mean for the story? Or the characters? Honest question, there are no wrong answers. I also haven't seen it in a while so I can't say anything in any way.

I guess I like movies/shows that have enough depth so you find more little tidbits of meaning the harder you think about it. That the director/writer put that much thought and effort into his work. I guess what I just wrote is basically that I like the “tries too hard”.

Hmmmmm.....I guess what you call “depth” I would call an “easter egg” since it doesn’t link back to the story in a meaningful way. Simply referencing something is fine, but it isn’t a substitute for story. I also detest movies that encourage you to think of your own meaning or explanation in place of actual storytelling. If you leave plot lines dangling and hint at paths the story *could* take at some point, but only take a few steps down each, I don’t view your story as “deep” or :thought pro voking”, I view it as I see it - half-baked. Which, to be fair, is likely the result of an underfunded and unfinished anime.

I 100% believe the anime lost direction and funding and it would be a much more complete and robust anime had it been properly finished. I don’t doubt that for a second. But as it stands, i also will not concoct a grandiose story in my head and then credit the anime for that story as if that was what was on screen. So, sadly, i stick with my 6/10 rating.

yeah, some (a lot?) of the details in NGE could be easter eggs. The multiple Rei’s from the future is part of the story though. I think we might just have different ideas of what makes a good movie. What I think is stretching your mind and allowing for multiple interpretations may be what you might consider half-baked ideas and dangling plot lines. I liked Blade Runner and Ex Machina as a bit more open ended movies. I liked that Old Boy’s plot details was obscured enough to make me work at it.

I think or at least really want to believe that NGE is epic. But I’m not able to describe the grand meaning of NGE . So your opinion is more objectively correct.
