The alfa is dead. At least for now. Time of death 7:40 PM EST. Cause of death: Loss of compression from piston to valve interference.

How this happened I’m not quite sure, maybe the stripped bearing cap studs allowed the cam to change timing enough to introduce some slack into the chain causing it get worse with the engine under load. All I know is that the number 1 cylinder is the worst one with mechanical damage on the piston top, head, and exhaust valve. All the rest seem ok from a borescope’s perspective.

Number one spark plug for reference. I may continue the teardown tomorrow if I feel like so brace yourselves for more carnage.

In happier news I did get a carb for the jag today which makes it one step closer to being completed.

Hopefully you can find another engine to put into it...I almost wouldn’t want to see it with an engine swap, it’s a bit ratty, sure, but the fact it’s still all Alfa was a big part of it’s charm! There are no shortage of rusted out Spiders out there...I can’t see that you couldn’t find a running engine from one somewhere?

Damn its a huge bummer when you put lots of work into something, aand even do some cosmetic work, and then the car says "nope im doing my own thing" . At least its small and lightweight and will be an easy swap, probably cheap too. Time to get that Jag running so you can have some motivation!
