Have you been to the NMCC Enthusiast's page on the book of faces? It's wonderful content.

I can... except I don’t know what that term means
(psst.. I suspect the term has
probably been updated to
something different in 2019 than it was in 1985)

Ah, missed that. It's perfect.

I hate this, but I do like it better with the handle.

This is good advice. I’m close to growing in the towel and sending it to a professional

What’s even broken? I think I asked a while ago but I forgot and can't find the comment.

I’m not sure, but it’s not getting spark. I’ve replaced everything but the distributor, check the wiring over and over. I do finally have power to the ignition coil. I need to check the firing order/ orientation on the distributor again. Seems like every time I read something I get a different answer.
I did get one little puff of smoke last time I was working on it but that was it. And it came out the intake not the exhaust. So I checked the spark plug wires again to make sure they were right, set it up like the forums says 1432, with lined up with a hash mark on the distributor. and then got nothing.

Isn’t the right order 1342? I figured it was the same for all EA827s, that’s what my ABAs are.
Did this start after you did plugs? I made the mistake of pulling all four wires at the same time and had all the wires 90° off. Do the trick where you pull a plug and put the electrode near bare metal on the engine block and see if it makes an arc (this sounded sketchy to me when I did this the first time but it’s totally fine). Also do a check on the output resistance on the coil. Also, I don’t really know Mk1s all too well, but do the distributors have points? I was working on a Mini and it lost spark because all the points were corroded.
Smoke out the exhaust is a weird one. That makes me think your spark is out of time. It’s possible you put wires on 180° out and the engine is breathing backwards.

I could have sworn i read 1432 but I’m also dyslexic. I’ve wanted to try that but haven’t had a second set of hands to help out.

Think about 1432 like this- it repeats continuously, so you would fire
1432143214321432
So cylinders would be firing one after another continuously, which cannot happen with a crankshaft that has outside pistons in sync with each other and inside pistons in sync with each other. It would also be incredibly bad for the balance of the motor.
Running with the assumption that you have an EA827-family motor like my cars do and assuming the distributors are the same, you should have 1 on the front, closest to the grille, 3 clockwise from there, then 4 on the firewall side, then 2 on the driver’s side.
Do you have a multimeter? They’re super helpful troubleshooting ignition stuff and an okay enough one is like $20.
Also, again this is kinda sketchy so don’t do this if you’re not comfortable, you don’t need a helper for the sparkplug to block arc trick. Put your car in neutral, set the handbrake, and chock the wheels, then put the key on in run position (without cranking it). Then take a wire or wrench or something and short out the appropriate
terminals on your starter (I don’t want to recommend which ones since I’m unfamiliar with Mk1s). Your distributor should turn and sparks will happen if there is high voltage getting to your plugs.

I didn’t think of shorting out starter!
I think I did actually have it 1342 because I remember thinking it was every other piston, but I know that’s not how I have them oriented. I have 1 on the back side closest to the block, so my 1 is where your 4 would be.

Gotcha, so 180° off of what mine was then? I happened to be looking at a Cabriolet on marketplace and noted that the wires are the same as on an ABA:
as in this diagram:
where “1" is the cylinder closest to the cam gear. Why don’t you give that a go?
