Acura Integra image I stole from internet for your time
I need a laser printer. My experience with these has been that the cartridge runs out of toner fairly quickly and you need to buy a new one. I have heard that you can refill the toner yourself, but the cartridge might have some sort of circuitry on it to prevent people from doing that.
Does Oppo know of printers that promote self toner refilling without bending users over?
Generic no name printer that prints well and allows users to refill toner?

It’s a laserjet..........
Black toner is the only option:
It’s expensive, but they last 6 months to a year with pretty constant printing for us. Not sure if you can refill the cartridges or not, but people sell refurbished cartridges, so that makes me think yes.

Not real special, but takes a lot of abuse and keeps on ticking?

If you don't need color, and don't mind printing pdfs a little slowly, I've yet to see something better than a HP Laserjet 5. At this point they are literally 20 years old, but the upside is replacement toner is cheaper than anything newer by a mile (or at least it was 2 years ago in the US). If you can find one that'd been lightly used they are good for literally 100s of thousands of prints but some folks who bought them didn't work them like that..

Yeah. I was kind of hoping for something new and, well, open source type. Damn you, printers!

I’m always checking cost to print in the reviews when shopping for a printer. I had a BROTHER home printer and will never buy one again. It constantly cleans itself so it uses up the ink just sitting there. HP always seems to be a good cost to print per page but keep looking. Once I find a few low cost print printers I’ll check reliability and it always seems to be an HP that winds my money. Cost of actual printer and ink is really not something to consider when it’s the page print cost that rules your ink spending.

My household has had a myriad of absolute garbage HP and assorted other printers over the years. Every one of them cost more in ink/toner in a year than the actual printer cost. The last few years we've been using Brother Printers and they are excellent. We have a black/white one that my siblings bring to college and a color one at home. Have replaced the Ink cartridge once in these 2-3 years and I even used a cheap generic cartridge off of amazon. $20 of ink in a few years and the printer actually WORKS every time. I highly recommend them.

There is only one answer: brother. I have been running on a low toner cartridge for 3 months and I last replaced it a year and a half ago.
You can find them for $99 on super special, generally $149 for a multifunction one from most computer places.
The low capacity cartridges are about $45, high capacity $60.
Here’s one at Amazon for $129:

We’ve got some fairly inexpensive HP LaserJetP1102w in our offices. The toner cartridges are expensive , but they last nearly a year for me.
I heartily approve of your lead image.

I like yours better. One of these days I will make it to El Paso. I know I owe you beer. My buddy is down there now but between kids, jobs and car malfunctions, he has his hands full. Don’t want to add my visit to his chaos.
As for printers, I want a printer with a toner cartridge that I can just refill. It should only cost me one time - one cartridge purchase if it doesn’t come with it off the bat.
I am at a point where looking at printers online for purchase is making me angry. Only reason I need a new printer is because cost of replacement cartridges is more than new printer. In what world is a consumable more than the tool?

Would recommend the Brother low end ones, and just buy the cheap- arse toner and drums for it. From memory the wholesale cost of the cheap cartridges for the HL-1050 type ones was less than $3, slightly more for the ones further up the range. Don’t bother with the original cartridges.
The HPs are decent, but are aggressive at locking out 3rd party cartridges.
Refilling isn’t worth it.

Just watched a video of someone refilling cartridge on this thing and resetting the Replace Cartridge warning on printer
However, comments right away say brother removed reset feature.
Why do you say refilling cartridge is not worth it? adding some powder seems cheaper and easier than buying a replacement 50-70 dollar cartridge every few thousand pages

Look at a HP LaserJet Pro 400. They’re modern so you can still get drivers for them unlike a lot of the ones recommended and reman toner cartridges are cheap. My wife prints a ton and this guy sits under her desk.
I've also put them in stores and offices in my day job where they see a ton of use and they're very reliable and cheap to operate.

Looking back through my e-receipts, I bought a Brother 2540 in May 2016, for $100. The toner cartridge that came in the box lasted until April 2018, when I bought a genuine Brother replacement toner cartridge for about $40. I can’t remember why I bought the genuine one instead of a generic but those are available for like $13 a pop or cheaper if you buy a multi-pack. Maybe something about the generic reviews when I looked last year prompted me to go for the genuine one. But if you’re concerned about toner costs, $13 every 2 years is so minimal that I’d be very hesitant to screw with refilling a cartridge.
