FJ Cruiser - 3 wipers???

Today I learnt that the FJ Cruiser has 3 windshield wipers???

I’ve casually lusted after these things for a while but never noticed that until I saw Doug’s video today. Makes me want one even more - and out here in the PNW I’ll get to see them in action all the time too!

Biggest downside for me is MPGs, given that I don’t otherwise need something quite so off-road capable. But damn they’re cool.

Earlier model years seem quite a bit cheaper - any folks (HHFP?) know how much these changed over the years, or if certain years are known to be more reliable than others? I doubt it?

Toyota has occasionally done weird wiper things: the 3rd gen Camry wagon and one of the Crown wagons had two rear wipers; the 2nd gen Yaris/3rd gen Vitz had a single front wiper.

The early FJ Cruisers has a tendency to do this:

It’s just like a 4Runner except less practical in every way!

The biggest mechanical change occurred in 2010, where they added VVT-i to the engine—a little more power, a few more MPG, and you can run it on regular instead of premium.

In terms of safety and comfort, they added side airbags in 2008 and active headrests in 2009, and added Bluetooth in 2011.

Great info, thank you! And agreed about it being a less practical 4Runner. Wasn’t particularly a fan of that generation 4Runner in the looks department, and that is just way too much vehicle for my needs. I’d argue this would probably be a more desirable item long term too as a result of its relative rarity and quirks ?

I have always loved these. A friend has one it is loud, crude, and it was expensive! But fuck if it isn’t awesome!

It’s certainly more interesting. I’m a longtime 4Runner/Land Cruiser devotee but I definitely get more excited when I see an FJ Cruiser, except then I remember the reasons I never bought one.

First year has a front tub problem and develops cracks in the fender well that's why they're cheap

i have an 07 fj driver side frame rails rusted threw In a couple spots love this. Truck but I had 90s jeep Cherokees that rusted slower

My uncle had an FJ. Loved the capability, hated the visibility and said it was way less spacious on the interior than he liked.

The early early ones (first year IIRC) would blow rear diffs. The progressively increased the rear diff size over the years from the 8" to an 8.6"
