Our place in Anchorage because how could we not?

Which is as exciting as it is intimidating.

Basically where we’re at is:

All hotels (13) booked

All flights (2) booked

All cars (3) arranged to be shipped*

Route and schedule finalized

F erries (2) booked

Passports and paperwork in order

Satphone reserved

International cell service enabled

Holy shit this is happening.

*The Tulsa cars are getting picked up Friday. The Austin car is being driven because of aforementioned !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I’m a bit worried about the Austin car though, cheap car without much time to prep makes sending it an extra 2000+ miles seem a little worrying.

It’s a tough sale when you don’t even know what it is...

Let us know about the sat phone if you have the misfortune of needing to use it. I had the pleasure of breaking down 2 hours from the nearest town/cell service on the Alcan last summer, a quick hitchhike was enough to get me to a pay phone.

I’ve heard t hat sat phone coverage is spotty at best, though they have become more or less standard equipment on the winter roads around here because a chance of service is better than no chance at all.

Wit h the prices they run, I don’t t hink I’d shell out for one. Pretty much anyone will stop to help on t hat road and there’s relatively steady traffic.

Yeah we hope to never need it, but at $200 for the three weeks it seems like cheap insurance. We rented one for our last trip and used it twice (for non-emergencies) and it worked well. It did get stuck in a reboot loop at one point, which was annoying.
