Another day, another gen of Bavarian confusion, the 8 Gran Coupe replaces the 6 Gran Coupe as a 4 door version of a 2 door car with a name that implies 2 door because of a lower roofline. Its dumb, but handsome. Here’s the pricing.
There are 3 trims to choose from: base 840i starts at $84,900 and gets a 3.0 335 horse TwinPower Turbo I6. It gets 29 mpg and a 4.9 second 0-60 time; a 840i xDrive starts at $87,800 and gets the same engine but AWD
. It knocks .3 seconds off the 0-60 time but you loose
2 mpg (for 27) due to the added heft. And at the top of the 8 GC heap sits the M tuned M850i xDrive. Starting at $108,900, it gets AWD
and a 4.4 liter TwinPower Turbo V8 with 523 horses.
The 840i comes pretty loaded, as it should considering its nearly $85k starting price. There are 2 designs to choose from. The standout standard features on the base Sport include:

Comfort Access keyless entry

The next design is M Sport. For an extra $4,850 it includes:
Park Distance Control
M steering wheel
Anthracite headliner
Shadowline exterior trim
Aerodynamic kit
Multi-Functional Seats
I choose the M Sport design taking the price to $90.250. There are 13 exterior colors. 1 metallic and 12 metallic. The standard color of Alpine White is no charge along with 8 of the other metallic colors. 3 of the other metallic colors are all $1,950 and then one color called Frozen Bluestone metallic, is a whopping $5k. I choose Black of course for no charge. It’s also of note that 2 of the metallic colors (Bluestone Metallic and Blue Ridge Mountain Metallic) can’t be selected with the M Sport design.
Wheel selections are plentiful too. There are 12 different designs to choose from. One 18”; six 19” with 4 of them being $1,300 options; and five 20” designs. 3 of these are $1,300 options and the last 2 are $2,600 options. And of course with this being BMW all the wheels are run flat. I choose a Black 20” wheel for $2,600.
Surprisingly
there are real leather choices instead of that Sensetec or whatever its called. There’
s a chose of 2 different
leather choices. Merino leather has 15 different color combos. 8 of the choices are $2,000 options. Vernasca leather ( I don’
t know the difference between
the 2 leather types but I assume one is softer than the other.) has 3 choices but they all don’
t work with the M Sport trim. I chose red/black leather interior at no extra charge.
One thing I can say about the 8 GC is that the dash is not attractive
. Like at all. It doesn’t mesh well with the car overall in my opinion. Anyway, there are 6 dash inlay options of varying woods,metals and finishes. I choose a piano black finish for $1,080.
There are a few options broken up between 3 option packages and 9 individual options:
Driving Assistance Package $500: just your standard suite of driving aids
Driving Assistance Professional $1,700: Same thing as above but includes Traffic Jam Assistant.
Comfort Seating Package $1,200: includes front ventilated seats, front and rear heated seats, power rear sunshade and rear side shades and multi functional seats.
Night vision for $2,300
Glass controls for $650
Anthracite Alcntara headliner for $650
Alcantar headliner in matching upholstery color for $650
Bowers & Wilkins sound system for $3,400
Integral active steering for $1,150
I added everything but the Glass controls and either of the headliners and the second driving assistance package.
All in, a 840i M Sport is just over 6 figures at $101,030; add on another $1,750 for the same options on an 840i xDrive.
The performance oriented M850i xDrive is the same for the most part. It has no designs to choose from though like the other 2 trims. Color options are the same for the most part, though it gets a nice Orange color the regular 8 GC doesn’
t get. I still choose black of course.
The M850i gets 7 wheel choices. One 19” and 6 20” choices. I choose a 20’ Black wheel riding on high performance tires. It added $1850 to the price. Interior color choices are the same as well as interior dash inlays. Surprisingly
there are no carbon fiber options.
The M850 has the same options except for 2. There is a cooling & high performance wheel and tire package for $1,850 that was automatically
selected when I choose the 20” option. The package also includes an extended shadowline kit and a mobility kit because of the run flats. It also includes a powerful cooling fan and an oil cooler.
The second package difference is the availability
of an M Carbon exterior package. For $4,100, BMW describes it as:
Emphasize the sporting pedigree of your vehicle with lightweight, decorative carbon elements such an M Carbon air curtain and M Carbon blade for the front, an M Carbon rear spoiler, dynamically-styled M Carbon mirror caps, as well as single-piece carbon finishers around the tailpipes. A non-carbon, visually-upgraded diffuser insert is also included.
With the same options the M850i will set you pack $122,980.
And there you have it, If you’re one of the people BMW thought thinks “if only an 8 Series had 2 more doors and a bigger back seat” and you have $120k burning a hole in your pocket, go pick one up

The fact that ventilated front seats and just heated rear seats don't come standard on a luxury flagship coupey thing that starts at $90k boggle the miiiiiind
