I get it but I don't get it. I feel like BMW has gone overboard with the popping. Probably MB too.

I think it started with the Jaguar F-Type.
Sure any tuner with a laptop has been dumping more fuel for burble and pops for years , but these things coming to stock performance vehicles I think can be traced right at the F-Type.

Yeah, F-type was probably first and IMO - still one of the best. BMW has one of the worst exhaust pops around. E very car I’ve been in that has it feels so hilariously German about it. It sounds the same every single time. Like there’s a little german man in the engine making sure things are fun enough but not TOO fun. If you’ve ever watched Clarkson’s Meet The Neighbors, he says about the Germans “It’s not that they don’t laugh - you just have to tell them when and where.”
Hans: Ah yes, Friedrich - Ve e need to make zee exhaust crack and burable becuze iz what zee word vants.
Friedrich: I veel set it to burable at 3002 RPM.
Hans: Das good. 3000 und 1 would be far too low.
Friedrich: How many burables would you like?
Hans: Vee have determined zat zee correct amount is s even.
User lets off at 4000rpm
Car: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7...
ECU: ZATS ENOUGH BURA BLES!!!!!!!!
