Pretty sure For Sweeden’s bot is that interested in old air planes.

Sounds to me like the performance increase over the B-29 was just too modest for the extra complexity. One thing about radial engines, they’re really reliable and durable. And the air cooling means that you won’t be crippled by a water leak.

I’d imagine that operating from packed coral and sand airstrips in the South Pacific wouldn’t be too kind to complex V engines.

As I said, it was really more of a “let’s see if this works just in case” scenario. It’s my understanding, though, that they were having a hell of a time with the Wright radials, and it took some time to get it ironed out.

I find it interesting how the Americans were so much more invested in radials than inlines. Or at least it seems so, when you look at the great American fighters, with the exception of the Mustang and Lighting coming immediately to mind. All the bombers were radials. As you say, there might be a slightly more powerful solution out there, but the radials just go. And, as a fighter pilot, it’s nice to have that huge disc of steel in front of you.

Radials were also scalable. Need more power? Toss another bank or two on there. With V engines you are kind of stuck unless you do some gymnastics. The are also compact considering the power.

I’ve noticed that kinja stuff is coming up in more news feed sources, e.g. AMP, google now, etc. It’s possible that your article contained enough of the right keywords for it to appear in a select few feeds that got it a bunch of clicks.

I am, especially concerning engines that ended up in these:

It looks that post is still pinned to the Oppo sidebar. I’ve had that happen to a couple of mine over the years that end up with like 2-6k views instead of a hundred or two like most of my posts. I think posts that get pinned to the sidebar have a way of getting picked up by crawlers indexing things. A google search for the XB-39 has your article as the 2nd result (or 3rd if I use a private window in a different browser) .

What do you mean by, “picked up by a crawler?”

As in, a search engine found it and indexed it.

So it registers a hit every time somebody searches for “XB-39?” Because I can’t believe that there are that many people searching for an obscure airplane.

I could imagine the result comes up in searches for other things that include some variation of xb-39, or where that is part of some larger search phrase . The internet is big place. I would guess that kinja is only counting actual page view where someone, or some bot, clicked through.

So I’ve looked through old posts, and it looks like this is my most viewed post (at 2.5k): STOVL/VTOL Aircraft Ranked

I don’t know where that traffic came from, but I can’t blame them, jump jets, tilt rotors, etc. are cool.

I wrote this one about supercharging   a year ago as I was trying to work something out for a post , and it’s since garnered 6.3k views. I have no idea why, but as somebody suggested in this thread , it likely got picked up by a search bot. I don’t really know what that means, but it would be interesting if you were to do a Google on “XB-39" and see where my post falls in the results.

Also has keyword “mustang” which is always good for search hits! If you k eep bringing the unwashed to Oppo we’ll have to fumigate again. you want trolls? cause this is how you get trolls! be careful with your keywords and search t erms, sheeple, it’s a dangerous internet out there!

Ditto the ttyy mmnn comment. The original Wright engine was a nightmare. The Wright radial was killing more crews than the Japanese. The XB-39 was a practical solution to a real problem. It was just too late and sunk cost and foreseeable end to the war made it just too late to be worth it .

Thanks, but I’m not convinced those are actual views. Might just be search hits. Or something. I’m not really sure how this whole internet thing works.

Sometimes I think the kinja masters use our posts in addition to the oppo blog as a test bed for their software. Your post is currently #3 when I google XB-39. Impressive.

And, as I said, I can’t believe that many people are reading it. As others have pointed out, though, it includes hot words like Mustang and Lightning, which are much more searched than obscure variants of the B-29.
