I’m lucky enough that I’ve never lost a close relative or a friend. I want to make that clear. I know I’m lucky that this is the worst it’s ever been. But still. I’m sitting on the side of the highway now and this is in front of me.

Kinja'd!!!

No body is hurt.

Shit. Well cars can be replaced and getting out without any injuries is great , but yeah it can feel like losing a friend. I guess you don’t need to worry about the stripe being a little crooked now...

Still not the worst thing that happened to me that weekend, although I’ll decide to further elaborate.

yeah, if you really like the car and are used to it.  My mom is not nearly as enchanted with the 2019 Fusion which replaced her totaled 2013, even though they’re about as identical as can be.

I’ve been caught twice when looking left to merge, the person in front of me suddenly stopped for no good reason.

Ridiculous, but technically my fault for rear-ending while having my head turned.

Kinja'd!!! USUSGTO > Rainbow
08/06/2019 at 13:49

Kinja'd!!!1

SO, technically his fault? Sin ce he stopped when he wasn’ t real ly supposed to stop.

Or technically your fault? Since you rear ended him. I thought that’s how the “law” worked in “most” states.

I am assuming you don’ t have a dash cam, to prove your case.

I have a bad feeling....I know up here if you rear-end somebody whether they stopped in a place they weren’t supposed to or not, the person doing the rear-ending is often at fault...

Kinja'd!!! jimz > USUSGTO
08/06/2019 at 13:56

Kinja'd!!!2

the vast majority of the time the “rear-ender” is held to be at fault. in Michigan the law is you are supposed to leave “assured clear distance” between your vehicle and anything in front of it.

The times when they legitimately aren’t? better hope you have a dash cam to prove your case.

Yeah, that sounds like even though the other driver may have stopped for no reason, it’s probably going to get classified as (unsafe following distance, excessive speed for conditions , and/or distracted driving).

I’ve come dangerously close to rear-ending people who stop and yields when clearly nothing is coming (I’d really like my next car to have auto-braking), but I think if I hit them, it would be on me.

Kinja'd!!! Rainbow > USUSGTO

Kinja'd!!!2

You can’t prove that the person ahead was “not supposed to stop,” so this argument almost never works out in favour of the rear-ender.

The driver ahead could have been startled by a giant Pikachu in the sky, and still likely escape fault as long as he/she has stayed in the lane.

The only reliable way out of insurance fault in a rear-end is to have dash cam footage showing that a car cut you off and left insufficient room for you to stop.  Or, clear indication of road range and intentional brake-checking.

Argh! Losing a good car is a terrible feeling. Mine is just dying slowly in front of me, which is easier than a quick and sudden death (same with people, usually).

That looks a lot like 285 near Sandy Springs. One of the worst stretches of highway in America, IMHO.

Cars are disposable. The ones that aren’t are in museums, or in storage. The minute it hits the road, it could be destroyed.

No pictures because there was (surprisingly) no damage, but it was an early 2000s F150. His hitch bar took all the impact, so I essentially sacrificed enough crumple zones for the two of us.

I would advise to buy the best pads you can, the Mini has some ridiculously expensive pads but I’m afraid of exactly these types of situations: when im distracted and someone does a stupid stop.

Wow, talk about a random guess for someone who doesn’t even live there :D

I was just there a couple months ago and over the past 25+ years I’ve traveled through that area, it’s always spooky. Blind hills and turns, dense foliage, everyone going 80+, passing on the right, weaving, street racing, you name it.

Sorry it happened, just saying that random accidents there are not a surprise at all. Hopefully you can find something new that you like just as much!
