What's a decent 9" Android tablet?

Nothing fancy, but runs a relatively recent version of Android OS. I’ll only ever use WiFi with it, so carrier/SIM doesn’t matter. Something cheap.

I use the Samsung S5E. If you need media playback, shitty games, and Oppo shitposting it’s a great tablet.

This was my upgrade from an iPad which was the first gen to use the small lightning connector.

I detest iPads. Straight talk.

I don’t need games nor media playback, just a couple of data apps and a web browser. Probably won’t even Oppo on it.

I’ll check Swappa. Thanks for the tip. What version of Android will that one run?

9" isn’t a terribly common size for Android. I just recently moved from an antiquated 7" to a 10" and while the weight difference isn’t fun when it comes to using it as an ereader , the extra screen real estate is quite nice because I can bump the font size (crummy vision as I get older) . The added battery life is a great bonus as well. Overall this is a solid tablet.

FYI , the latest Galaxy S5e 10" (2019) has slightly better specs and an AMOLED screen (great for deep blacks) which is also nice for an ereader, I hear some wifi issues about it.l and it's $100 more.

I need to figure out what the minimum Android version is that I need to run.

Nuts, I forgot about the fact that I bought it with a promo where it came with a set of bluetooth headphones. Made it a much better deal at the time.

If you want a recent version of Android on a tablet you need a Pixel tablet but Google really isn’t supporting this shit, they only care about the phone OS.

Not really helpful but I love my Nexus 7 (2013 version). I’ve had it since 2014 and it has survived through three different cell phones I’ve owned in the mean time. Still kicking and the battery isn’t bad either. I suppose it helps that it doesn’t get nearly as much abuse as a phone but it’s just nice that it still runs well after 5 years. And I paid peanuts for it brand new, only $100 back during a Staples sale. 16gb is limiting, especially with no SD card but otherwise it’s perfect for me.

Isn't there a larger Nexus 10 or something like that? Tablet market seems thin since everybody trends towards tablet sized phones. But I like the combo of a sub 5-inch phone and 7-inch tablet. That has served me well for many years. Too bad sub 5-inch phones are always garbage but such is life.

I occasionally  use a 10" Amazon Fire that I picked up for $100. I don’t know what OS version is on it, but I did tweak it a little so that I could add apps from the Google Play store. It's fine for what it is, but what it isn't is a polished, premium product.

Up to 10 inches. The Nexus 9 came out a couple years ago. The Nexus 10 came out years ago

What’s the application? I just use a Fire HD 10, because it’s super cheap for what you get (and sales are fairly common). That’s of course not a particularly modern version of Android, but it wasn’t hard to get Google Play installed to free at from Amazon’s walled garden, and I can only think of one Android app that hasn’t worked on it.

A Kindle fire is what I have here, but it's locked down to the point of being useless. Can this tablet be tweaked in like manner?

How do you get Google Play to work? I've got a Fire here that's useless.

Sure. It’s basically an Android tablet with Amazon’s proprietary UI on top, so tweaking it like I did to mine should be possible. I don’t know exactly which model you have but here’s a page with some units listed and how to modify them accordingly:

Basically you just have to enable sideloading and then download and install the Google APKs from apkmirror. S omething like this, though it might vary a bit depending on which device you have : https://www.howtogeek.com/232726/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-your-amazon-fire-tablet/

Thank you. The Fire that I have may be too old for this, but I'll keep pecking at it.
