Not easy to choose a favorite song, though. A wide range of sounds across their discography, and very high quality studio work throughout. Lots of polish. During my trip to White Mountain last week, I had a deep dive into Steely Dan on the very acceptable stereo in the rental car.

My personal fave is 'Changing of the guard'. I also enjoy the fact that, in the religiously fuelled USA of post WW2, a band named after a vibrator made the top of the charts....

I did not know that. Their music is weird but fascinating and compelling and polished and richly interesting and varied.

William Burroughs, 'Naked Lunch'. Book was widely banned and 20 years later Steely Dan was top of the charts.

I don’t listen to Steely Dan but this song’s alright.
The only song I really know from them is this one (which I also enjoy):

Between my dad and I, we own ever record and single. I cant really name a favorite as it changes so often. Few favorites: My old School. Time out of Mind. Jack of Speed. The Fez. Dont take me alive. FM. Bohdisatva

Steely Dan is the bomb
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

Some of my co-workers wondered why I was laughing so hard one day , but it was because a show on a radio program used the instrumental portion of this song as bumper music when talking about Michael Cohen after he pleaded guilty to multiple charges. Sometimes they really nail it with the music choices, and to many people out just sounds like nice background music. There have been many other examples of well-chosen songs used in this way, but this is the one really stuck in my head.

This and BTO are what I call “dinosaur rock”, and I can tolerate it every few years.

I love the first album, but I rarely listen to anything later than it. But the first album is my go-to for seeing if a stereo is set up right

Music from before I was born, but not in a good way. I remember my dad’s midlife crisis friends listening to similar 25-30 years ago, so that ’s what I associate it with. I can deal with it in small occasional doses.
