If you were junking a car, which would you leave on it (the other would be sold on craigslist or whatever)?
* Stock wheels that are “meh” - rusty, have been re-sprayed black and are rusting again, but have good snow tires on them
* Stock wheels that are “ok” - a little rust, but original finish and not too bad, but have dangerously old junk tires on them
(not my picture, but the wheels in question are the same/
uglier
)

I’ve just put the intake/plenum back to stock to sell the better parts off it, not much else worth anything on this car. I’d have a hard time towing it to a junkyard without any sort of wheels/tires though :)

That was my first instinct too, but I have no use for the tires themselves. It’s a question of what would sell better - meh wheels with good tires or good wheels with “seriously, don’t drive on those” tires.

If you’re talking nothing but stock steel wheels, then why not clean up the serviceable-tire set and even rattle can them with a quick coat?

I just pulled them off and pressure washed them, they’re in better shape than I thought. Really only one that looks more than a little but rusty, though one is leaking from the bead pretty significantly.
It’s not a bad idea to re-refinish them, but in reality it’s one of those things where I can spend $10 and two hours to make the set of wheels increase in value by about $20 ;)

Agreed. But if it gets them out the door more quickly...

I
might
already have someone interested (from the forums), if that falls through this becomes a better possibility.

There is a car being junked, and a set of wheels being sold. I’ve swapped them around so the meh wheels (which aren’t as bad as I thought) with good tires are for sale, the okay wheels with bad tires are on the car.

Are we talking about cheap steelies? I’d post them up on local forums or FB groups as free to a good home, mix and match any 4 out of the 8 wheels/tires. Whatever is left, toss on the car and send it to the big scrapyard in the sky.
But to specifically answer your question, I would sell the crap wheels with the good snow tires and junk the car with the ok wheels and crap tires. Mostly because it sounds like neither set of wheels is all that impressive, but will serve their purpose equally. The tires on the other hand, well, once they’re done, they’re done.

That’s essentially what I decided on. They are all the same stock steel wheel, so the ones with good tires came off the car (and after a wash are in better shape than I thought) and the only-slightly-better wheels with 12-year-old no-name tires worn to the wear bars have gone onto the car to go away with it.
I should be able to get a few bucks for the wheels I took off, as much as I hate to think about it, winter is kind of on the way and someone’s got to be looking for snow tires for their 02- panther.
