Why? Why would you buy British gin from an airport in Spain, to take back home, when there are many exquisite local brands? That’s as silly as buying and taking Jack Daniels back to America, when you’re coming from a vacation in another country. Or like eating only McDonalds and KFC when you’re visiting Europe, like some Americans actually do.

He’s a British guy vacationing in Spain. That’s par for the course. You get a chance to see all the British pubs in Barcelona? Why in gods name would you choose to eat British food in Spain?

To avoid paying alcohol taxes? I don’t know how that works within the common market, but it can be (though isn’t always) cheaper to buy American alcohol at a duty-free and take it home than to buy it at a local liquor store. Still not an adventuresome choice, but maybe an economically sensible one?

T he people of Spain see British food as some sort of curiosity, so they have it from time to time, for the laughs. There’s also the Brits visiting who eat it, for the same reasons why my people eat McDonalds in places like Spain, Italy or France, familiarity. Also, I’ve seen Germans and Dutch people, eating at British places in Spain. I guess they get the feeling of visiting more counties at once.

A German backpacker, who was coming to Málaga from Bucharest, told me he had one of the best dinners at a Japanese/Lebanese fusion there. I found it hard to believe, but hey, people have different tastes.

You can have great food in Galicia. Nigran has the luck of being near the one of the best fish markets in the continent (Vigo).
Its just such a strange mixture... what they have not figured out how to do properly is Mexican food.

Not the case. The bottle was like € 50 , it’s £ 45 on the company website.

We have a place here called Sushi Sonora. Mexican-Sushi fusion. This idea frightens me.

Supposedly the fish is all substituted with various Sonoran style meats.

So... blood-soaked rice and pools of garlic butter around the plate
? Sounds like something you’re smart to stay away from.

Maybe it’s cheaper due to it being duty free in the airport, maybe he thinks it’s cheaper because it’s duty free in the airport, maybe he wants to just knock a couple of sneaky ones on the flight, or crack it open as soon as he gets home and not have to go shopping for one when he lands, etc...
Or just never seen that bottle design where he island likes the look of it.

I’ve seen a lot of duty free stores lately and I'm of the opinion that they're for idiots. People get it in their mind that no tax means it's actually free. And people like an excuse to spend money and feel good about it.

I brought a list of scotches with the calculated exchange rates with me to E dinburgh, , and the prices I was seeing in Edinburgh, and at the airport weren’t enough to make it worth the hassle of carrying on the plane.
When I was in Hawaii, the duty free was filled with Japanese and Chinese, and someone was telling me after that folks from china can practically pay for their flight by selling the stuff they buy.

Wow. Seems to be a big thing in China, buying goods to sell back home. We have a problem with baby formula in Australia, the Chinese take it all
