Yep, I still haven’t followed up about my own Touareg project, guess I’ve been driving it and just enjoying it for what it is rather than wanting to write about it. But I promise, that’s soon.
That having been said, Jalopnik did post TFL’s initial video about all the luxury features and other options that came on their 2004 Touareg V8. They then took it on an easy enough trail in a follow up video, and now they’re giving it some proper challenges and pitted it head to head against their 04 LR Discovery with knobby tires.
The Touareg, still on street tires, did not disappoint:

They really are incredible off-road. Good hardware and very active brake based traction.
I personally wouldn’t own one, but I respect their capability. I would wheel with one any day (so long as the owner is up to date on maintenance and ready with spares and tools)

Are you an experienced wheeler? If so, where are you based?
I might take some guidance in trying mine off road sometime.

The lack of articulation doesn’t seem to hinder these much , but it is a very different look and feel to wheeling a stick axle Jeep, of that I am certain.

I might take it to Moab at some point. The girlfriend has a friend out that way and would provide us a place to stay and they want to go out and have fun on the trails too with their own rig.
We’re in Northern California (for now). The Moab trip may very well happen at some point. Might have to get ahold of you if it does.
But first, need to pay some debts down, buy and install skid plates and rock sliders... and more appropriate tires.

He’s kind of our resident off road expert. You might enjoy some of his past posts. Many of them are excellent.
