I bet you all forgot about the kitchen remodel I undertook last summer, got mostly finished, but then school started and the project stalled. Or, you never gave a shit anyways. Or, it’s been so long since I updated my progress that you have no idea what the hell I’m talking about.

Iff notes recap: last summer I tore out our shitty way past expirat ion date kitchen, slightly remodeled the room, fixed an abortion of wiring that made me wonder how the fuck the house didn’t burn down, installed cabinets that I designed and built from s cratch , installed granite countertops (the only part I hired out for), installed a new floor, installed new appliances (except the fridge, which was much newer and in good shape) and then .... Completely stopped.

I entered this summer with the goal of finishing the kitchen. My wife has forbid me from doing any of the deal coating of the cabinets, because she knows I hate doing that and will rush it/half-ass it. She is not wrong, but she also hasn’t gotten much of that done. Instead t his summer I have spent a bunch of time doing fun things with the family, built a deck for my friends, helped my dad do some work on his house, cleaned out my garage, and sold a bunch of stuff that wasn’t getting used to replenish my fun money funds. Frankly, it’s been a very good summer.

The lack of kitchen progress has been eating at me though, so I side-stepped the lack of wood finishing progress, and took on the backsplash. This was necessary to cover up some holes left in the plaster from fixing the wiring. Plus it was going to make it look a lot less like a construction zone.

We picked this rough uneven split granite, because while the cabinets are straight and level and square (the countertop measuring guy complimented me), the walls are completely out to lunch. We needed some thing that could follow the wall and “move” with it. I’m quite happy with the results!

Today I’m replacing those temp outlets with proper GFCIs. School  starts in a week and a half, and I want to get the last bit of trim work done before then. Cabinet doors will have to wait until winter break.

Nice work. The farmhouse sink is awesome. I wish I would have used one on our project. My terrazzo tops ate  up my budget.

Looks awesome! Now  I feel bad I haven’t gotten more done this summer. All these work special assignments have been greedy with my time.

I remember! Looks great.

I really need to finish the floor in my mudroom. I've got everything to finish it but I never get around to moving the washer and dryer.  Oh well

I had big ambitions as well, so far the only thing I've done is smash up a wishing well and start peeling some wallpaper I was too lazy to touch all winter.

Nice, I haven’t touched our downstairs bathroom since we had our first child 2 months ago...it’s down to the studs right now and I still need to frame the new shower before I can start putting walls and floors back in. It’s been eating at me, but my wife basically banned me from doing anything this summer.

Looks great! I remodeled a bathroom over the last month. I learned an important lesson in the process. Don’t buy ready to install vanity/countertop combos. No room is perfectly square. Spend the extra money and have a countertop company measure and cut the top to accomodate for discrepancies. Or you could end up with gaps like this.

Thanks!

You’re not wrong about those units , but I will tell you this. Nobody will ever notice that but you, and possibly weirdos like me. Believe me, there are flaws in my kitchen and mistakes that I’ve made. It took me years to learn to shut my mouth and stop pointing them out :)

Thanks!

Believe me, I've done a loooooooot less to it than I had hoped, but it feels good to check a big box and a few little ones off of the list

Your wife is right, enjoy the baby. They grow up faster than you can believe. Honestly, as m uch as I’m disappointed I didn’t get a lot more of the kitchen done, I needed to spend  some time with my kids this summer. I was up to my ass in remodel last year, and they got almost none of my time. I'm glad to have made some memories with them this summer.

Thanks!

Moving appliances is a bitch! Especially when you have to deal with water hookups.

Oooffff, terrazzo tops! Dare I ask how much those ran you?

The sink wasn’t that expensive. It was something around $300 from Costco.

Only if part of the drywall comes with it, which it did.

I sell a lot of granite. I got my slab at cost and it still was $7000 for my small kitchen. But worth it. We needed some color added to an all wood house.  Nice find on the sink. Usually ss farm sinks are around $1k.

You can see the floor pretty well in the last shot. That's the finished floor. It's a commercial grade synthetic plank flooring. It looks great in person, and it's hard as a rock. It was murder on my saw blades though!

I was hoping that’s what you were going to say. Looks great to me! I went with a distres sed hardwood look, because under all the linoleum and tar-paper and layers of mastic in between ...was distressed hardwood!
I sanded, stained and poly- ed it and that was that. I couldn’t be happier.

Your dry stacked backsplash looks great. It’s hard to keep the lines straight with no grout.

Nice!

We had hoped to strip down to the original floor and try to save it. There were at least three layers of linoleum and mastic and underlayment, and the kitchen was in service in some fashion all but three days during the whole remodel. Between us eating with dishes washed in that room and having two little kids, we decided stripping the floor was too big of a health risk. So , we just laid this floor on top of all the old ones. Not ideal, but such is life.

Thank you as well :)

The stone came in 12x12 sheets, so it wasn’t too bad. They aren’t perfect in truth, but pretty close. The random nature of the surface makes the tiny gaps  here and there forgivable.
