This is not the actual truck, but how it looked in my pickup truck dreams.
I was going to look at a 91 F150 (302/5 speed) It seemed like a good deal, although it remained for sale for quite a while. When I was going to finally go see it, it had sold. Two days later I saw It abandoned on the side of the road a little bit south of S askatoon. So from where it was, it climbed the Biggest hill we have to offer, but failed to get where it was going.

When I was searching for my first car, I had found a ‘97 Silverado Z71 that I quite liked. It had a fresh engine and trans, and was in overall decent shape. Shortly after that, I found my 4Runner and kind of forgot about the Silverado. Within the next year, I saw that Silverado 3 times around town, broken and on the side of the road.

I’m sure all of those bullets were cheaper than the buckshot that was the headgaskets exploding 200 miles from home.

Flip side to this kind of story, I sold my f150 to a family who gave it to their son for his first car (aside, this was a v6 base model 2006 f150 XL without air from the factory - what parent buys their kid a car with no air in this day and age). About a week later I passed it sitting backwards in a ditch. That weekend I saw on the local facebook page that family was looking for someone to repair the transmission. They got bamboozled by a shade tree and about a month later posted cost for things and continued to look for a good mechanic get the truck back in proper running order. I oversold the truck considering the trim level (thanks wheels/tires and a little bit of paint) so they already had too much in it, then dumped another $4k or so in to it according to their post. I felt bad, but their kid played a stupid game and they all won a stupid prize.

Fun fact my first vehicle was a burgu ndy red 90 F150 Lariat. Amazing condition, I babied the hell out of it. Sometimes kick myself for selling it but then remember the lack luster 302 in it, auto trans and 2wd. Getting it to where I would like it would have cost me more than I paid for my current truck - which I feel is cooler even though it's not an OBS.

The first time I saw one of those F ords was the summer of 86, when a neighbou rhood dad came home with a new red 87 to replace his tired 77. They look dated now, but the 87 ford was straight out of the Jetsons in the summer of 86. It looked like it was from the future.

Guess it wasn’t that good of a deal after all.

I stripped and painted more of these than any person should have. I w orked at a Ford body shop n the early 90's when they were respraying peelers under warranty...I could probably still do one strictly on muscle memory! Also d id a short stint in a Chevy store’s body shop and did a good bit of Beretta/Corsica peelers.

Ah the peelers of the 90's blue and white GM, Silver Fords, A ll mopars as I recall. GM STILL can’t paint a car work white and make the paint stick!

Anything that’s had an engine and trans replaced is an automatic red flag for me, unless it has over 200k miles.

It had 170k miles on it, and judging by some of the “repairs” by the previous owner, it likely wasn’t maintained well. Pretty much all of the issues I've had with it are because of that dumbass.

I guess I’m just used to older domestics that can easily make 200k on the original driveline, no matter how terribly their treated...
Regardless, if I see something under 200k that’s needed a motor or trans, it gives me an automatic red flag that it likely was taken very poor care of or is a problem child , which means I should walk away.
