Hey, so I want to do a UX project studying dating apps for Muslims. Even though most of you aren’t Muslim, I figured it would still be a good idea to harvest your opinions and experiences on using dating apps. If you don’t mind, please take this survey which asks about your experiences and feedback using online dating apps/services. Thanks!

Survey design UX tip: Use multiple choice where possible, I’m too lazy to fill out free form answers.
Also from personal experience, if you advertise with an image of a cute woman with huge, deep eyes like Catholic Match Girl here, you too can get mocked on a football site:

I think though given how personal the topic is, having comment boxes is more suitable since I’m asking people to share their experiences.

Me too, though we didn’t hit it off until we arrived at the same college two years apart. Been with her for 33 years now, including courting and marriage.

I’m old enough to have never used (or considered using) a dating ap
plication. [I hate the word ap, btw. It just wears on me for some reason] My opinion is therefore invalid regarding them.

Haha yup. She has actually met quite a few. ToddinTN and TYSMagic are local friends now, E90M3 has crashed drunk at our house, UnderSTeer Enthusiast and his significant other have stayed at our house as well(not as drunk), then a few Oppo meets including one here in Tennessee and one last week in LA. Also just booked our room the Dragon!

That’s awesome ! We dated Sophomore through Senior, then broke up fresh,an year of college when we went to different schools, then Sophomore through Senior year of College and got married a week after graduation. 2+ years later and going good.

You should change your philosophy and go with something with better marketability.
I suggest making an app designed with the sole purpose of sending wiener pic s. You can name it something quirky and slightly mis-spelled , like WEENR or DONGR . Then charge dudes for using it. Add in a bunch of fake profiles and machine learning bots to think that people are actually looking at the wieners, thus encouraging more paid users.

In HS, we were two years apart. She ran with the preppie Oxford shirt Topsiders crowd, I ran with the army jacket pot smoking crowd. Had a couple of classes with her, spoke a bit, but I wasn’t her type, I guess. I went to local uni for two years because my grades sucked (the dope might have had something to do with that), then transferred to another college in what was her freshman year. She recognized me in the dining hall, and sent a friend over to ask me if I was who she thought I was because she was too embarrassed to ask herself . After ascertaining from her gay roommate that I wasn’t gay (all music majors are gay, right?), we got together and the rest is history. Just celebrated our 29th anniversary.

I met my wife before the internet was used for dating apps. Back then we wrote ISO ads in the local weekly paper.
“SWM ISO SF 18-35 , no smoker, no drugs , NO KIDS, must like star wars, mountain bikes, and old cars. Vocational education and experience in flux core welding a plus.”

You’re missing the most important aspect of dating apps - Exploiting the insecurities of the user base for profit.

I’m - unfortunately - a frequent dating site user. Honestly, I think the best kind of dating app would mirror what OkCupid USED to be. There were premium features that you could pay for, but the base functions of the app like simply seeing who messaged you and you sending messages to people weren’t locked behind bizarre paywalls.
OKC as it exists today locks your messages behind a strange paywall. You can send a message to anyone you want, but they cannot see your message unless they like you back, and they have to find you first to like you . Likewise, if someone sends you a message you will never see it unless you like them, and good luck with that!
Now this doesn’t sound too bad, but here’s the additional hitch: They tried to copy Tinder’s swiping feature. So you have to trust the algorithm to give you good matches through the “Doubletake” feature (it doesn’t) and also hope that the person that messaged you actually shows up in the thing. It’s a terrible way to match with people. The settings gave you the option to hide straight people ...Doubletake often ignored the setting .
OH! And you can’t see who likes you either unless you like them back. They currently charge as much as $20/month for the privilege to read messages and to see who likes you. Oh, and if you don’t pay you’re less likely to even show up as often in Doubletake.
I liked it better when paying money really only got you things like read receipts, profile visibility, and other things that were nice to have, but not necessary.

Thanks for your input. Seems like dating apps are going the way of many online/mobile games these days... DLC.
One thing I personally find (and other people have told me) really aggravating about the swiping mechanism is the inability to skip someone. What if I am unsure about someone? Some apps like MuzMatch won’t let you see any other matches unless you swipe on whatever they show first.
Understandably these apps make it really easy for users to make a quick decision on potential matches but it almost forces you to rely on your preferences/biases/and make a quick decision rather than taking your time.
