At least Google says it’s not a road.
Looked like one to me. It solidified some things in my mind about my next car. I don’t do real off-roading but I do go up in to the mountains at times and need to be able to handle narrow and rough two-tracks without bending a wheel or blowing out a low profile tire. It’s nice to have a small turning radius too to make turning around easier. I also need MORE POWER so I can pass people who can’t manage to maintain their speed on a curvy road. The passing opportunities are few and short so the car must be able to answer the call for full speed quickly.
My wife thought we might have wandered into Canada. We were a good 10 miles from the border.
ETA: We were 2 miles from the border according to Google Earth.

Yeah, that would have been a definite contender. Really the Mariner isn’t terrible for what I do. It needs more ground clearance and power, and maybe some skid plates to protect things, but the general size is good.

Skipped over the whole “more power” part, eh? A Wrangler is more than I need and wouldn’t be a good daily given the state of the streets around here.

I6 is plenty for a TJ. But I certainly understand the desire for a gentler ride.
Wimp.

Can you see Russia from there? (I like that gen Mariner/Escape - a few issues, but perfect size and simple enough to be relatively reliable.)

they really should put the new 2.4 in the Forester.... but the new Outback Onyx seems like a nice alternative.

I would recommend a KL cherokee. except I can’t recommend them to anyone for any reason. Too bad, they would give you everything you need.

It’s a good size and very practical, but the V6 could use more punch and it’s showing its age.

Right now I’m thinking the Passport might work. It’s not a powerhouse but it might be a good compromise.

i was going to suggest passport but it's bigger than it sounded like you wanted

I’m going to go one step bigger, mid-sized two row, just because it opens up a lot more options. Plus smaller ones have shrunk their cargo space by going with swoopier styling.

Capable of some light off-roading. Decent power. Small turning radius.
I think you need a Safari Porsche 911. Buy a cheap high-mileage 996 with tired suspension, and give it some off-road suspension, tyres and skid plates.
Sensible suggestions? I don’t know what your budget is, but early 2000s Mercedes G Class’s are available for under $30k now. A bit overkill for light off-roading, but given that they have a 5l V8, they have decent performance, and they’re surprisingly compact too, so they are reasonably manouverable .
If you want something that’s properly sensible though, I’d recommend a VW Golf Alltrack. Its cheap, available with a stick, and its designed specifically for light off-roading.

Definitely looking at something newer (2-3 years old max) because it has to double as a daily driver and I’d really like something from this decade before it’s over. German cars are in the “probably not” category right now because of total cost of ownership reasons. The budget is looking like $40k max.

Maybe see what CarMax has. If they still offer them with comprehensive warrantees, maybe just buy a fast German vehicle anyway and leave them to pay for every expensive repair, like what Doug DeM uro did with his Range Rover.
Or maybe a Buick Regal TourX. Its still German (rebadged Opel), but you can get them brand new in your budget, so you have the warrantee. Same goes for the Golf Alltrack, which is something like 24k brand new.

Cars from this decade, just like cars from last decade, only made cheaper, loaded with more gimmicks to break.
