Went out on the boat with my folks this weekend and we stopped at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , a lighthouse built on the Chesapeake Bay way back in 1882. It was built on a concrete caisson and when the bay froze over in 1977, ice picked up the caisson, tilted it, and put it back down crooked.

That's all well and good, but did you catch any fish?

These other folks were out there fishing but the only thing we had to put in the fishing pole holders of our boat was a couple beach umbrellas from when we dropped anchor for a picnic in the middle of the water.
My parents’
next door neighbor had a big party at their house and ordered crabs, but also managed to catch like 30 crabs in the
traps on their pier, which they offered to my parents because they were all crabbed out from the party. My dad brought them home but my wife was rather
irked by casual brutality of
it.

when the bay froze over in 1977
I was living in Norfolk at that time, but I don’t remember that. I was only 11, though, so probably not paying much attention. I would wager that was probably the last time it froze over.
In 1775, George Washington considered attacking Boston by crossing the frozen Boston Harbor. How long do you suppose it’s been since that body of water froze solid?

They say that crabs and lobsters feel pain when you put them in boiling water.
They are also delicious with melted butter.

I believe your second point cancels out your first.

They proven that if you kill them right before you boil them, it doesn’t hurt the meat now.

Exactly. I didn’t claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables.

How do you kill them first? And isn’t that just as cruel?

I want to say ice pick to the brain, and no, it actually kills them instantly.

I was slightly wrong, but spike them through their underside. https://kb.rspca.org.au/knowledge-base/what-is-the-most-humane-way-to-kill-crustaceans-for-human-consumption/

No snuff film accompanying the article? I kid. I love me some crab and lobster, but I will always let somebody else cook them.

Casual brutality of eating food? She one of those vegetarians? You ever heard a cucumber scream?
Also, fuck picking crabs. The work does not justify the reward. Give me a crab cake any day.

Interesting when it froze over exctly 100 years before in 1877. there was a lighthouse abandoned. Another crew stayed and manned theirs until the ice sheared it and carried down the bay.
after the second crew was rescued the first were fired and they were then given the second station.
A neat stop is calvert marine mysuem. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvert_Marine_Museum the aquarium side is mostly for kids, but the boats are neat. My great uncles hydroplane is one of the displays.

We’re both vegan. The crabs didn’t bother me in that moment since my parents are carnivores anyway so our presence wasn’t going to save those crabs. I guess I’m a bad vegan.
But yes, if you think about it,
casual
brutality is
one neighbor offering up a bushel of creatures
to another neighbor to boil alive and tear to bits
.
I like nice creative words.

Weird. I don’t find anything brutal about it all.

Yeah. It snows in Hawaii all the time. Those mountains are tall. Mauna Kea on the big island means “ White Mountain” in Hawaiian.

Seemed a little off to me too.

Hey, I know this is off topic and sort of weird, but you used to live in Madison Wisconsin, right? I wanted to ask if you could recommend any good driving roads around here, particularly closer to Middleton.
![]() 08/06/2019 at 08:43 |

Yes, and I used to like the roads straight west of Madison that run north/south between highways 14 and 18. Basically just draw a box on the map with the corners at Black Earth, Mt. Horeb, Dodgeville and Spring Green. Tons of options.

That’s a really neat artifact, if you can call it that. I flew over the Chesapeake the other day and was reminded just how gigantic it is. I’d love to explore it, or at least parts of it, I haven’t made it out of Annapolis harbor.

My parents’ vacation house is a little bit south of St. Michael’s. This is roughly the path we took to get to the lighthouse.

If you have something that has even a whiff of offroad cred, there’s the Trans Wisconsin Adventure Trail. Most times of the year it’s reportedly not that bad. I so wanna hit it up on a scooter one day.

That looks like a lot of fun! I don’t think my stock TDI wagon would appreciate all the gravel, but I’ve also been trying to find some good gravel/dirt roads to drive in the VW bus. Probably could sell it to my dad as a camping trip next summer.
