Saw this at Ars: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2019/07/proposed-us-law-would-ban-infinite-scroll-autoplaying-video/
On one hand, I don’t think Congress needs to address this. On the other hand fuck autoplay video (infinite scroll isn’t as bad, but it’s still also sort of sucky).

I’m ok with infinite scroll to a point but I hate autoplay. It’s obnoxious and slows down page loading.

We just joined our town’s local Facebook group (anonymously) for the first time ever.
The endless autoplays and autoloops of every video and gif is probably singlehandedly responsible for the reduction of our national attention span.
If it weren’t considered the norm, I’d be so annoyed I’d just cancel my account. But everyone does it — Kinja, CNBC, CNN, you name it. Such a weird and intrusive feature for people to accept.

I hate both of those things, but these seems like an inappropriate means of addressing it. Not everything that's annoying needs to be illegal.

There are actually very good energy efficiency and data capacity reasons for binning autoplay video. It accounts for an unreasonably large amount of data traffic which is taking up capacity in networks but (more importantly) it accounts for a significant proportion of the energy usage (and therefore greenhouse gas emissions) of data centres around the world. And it is so easily avoided...
Ban them I say!!!

I’m fine with autoplay on certain webpages. Like YouTube, where watching the video is, well, kind of the whole point. But not in the middle of an article FFS. Let me finish reading the article (or at least the paragraph I’m on), THEN I’ll watch the video.
Infinite scroll is mostly terrible. Sometimes it’s nice for automatically expanding search results, but in most cases it just makes the user experience worse. It certainly doesn’t belong here on Kinja.
