The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! for all new Volkswagens is coming to an end. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! discovered the news, learning that a new warranty would be put in place for all Volkswagens for the 2020 model year. That new program brings the coverage down to a 4-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty + 2 years of free maintenance

You don’t cancel a benefit like this after just 2 years , especially because you’re Volkswagen post-Dieselgate. It’s too soon, IMO. You know how long Kia/Hyundai has had theirs running? (Even if it is just limited power train warranty) Do they understand that maintenance costs are not as big of a concern on their vehicles, but reliability is. SMH.

Better get that 2019 model Oppo car of the year soon.

I’m shocked they could make it work in the first place, but competitively there’s no reason for it. Incorrect public perception is that a lot of companies have 8-10 year warranties on them, even though that’s just powertrain. So VW probably had a hard sell here.

Yep, my lingering decision to get a 2018-19 model is getting stronger. They can’t renege on an existing deal...and the transferability is an amazing feature for resale, if that comes up.

I don’t know warranties real well, but my old man used to run a worldwide service depart ment for a non-auto manufacturer — and he said that after a certain period (for cars, let’s call this “four years”) each year of additional claims is usually more than the entire initial period combined. It drops off a cliff.

Not surprised unfortunately . It just seemed like a too good to be true kind of thing to run multiple years. Good marketing to help people forget Diesel gate.

I don’t know why Hyundai’s 10 year 100k mile mechanical warranty is not industry standard. I know it’s not bumper to bumper, but does Hyundai really make a car that much better than any other major auto maker that powertrain issues don’t show up in the first 100k miles? All other automakers have a pathetic warranty in comparison.

Now that I’ve taken a breath, let me elaborate.

I know a fair amount of people who have gotten a new VW because of the warranty. That thing was literally the deciding factor. That’s huge that they’re already ending it. It looks as if they don’t want to stand by their product, and maybe you shouldn’t buy one.

I just can’t wrap my head around this.

Edit: Wait, I just finished the article. They did it so their dealers can make money on extended warranty contracts and in service. Lovely. Just lovely.

And it would likely get people to have more work down at the dealership to avoid any issues with possible warranty claims.  I know I had our new Pacifica serviced at a dealer through the shitty warranty period just for that reason.

That’s actually great news for that 2020 Golf R I want to buy in 2023.  The resale values will cliff dive like BMWs over 50k miles.

I sometimes ponder getting a 4Motion GSW or Alltrack but the frustrating part is that, in general, those cars aren’t that depreciated and the 2017s that are available 2nd hand have the lesser warranty. I’ve been surprised VW offers anything that long to begin with.

The warranty was definitely a deciding factor for me when I bought my 2018 GTI. It also made the buying process easier since the dealer didn’t bother trying to up sell me on anything, I was in and out in 90 minutes . I remember wondering at the time how mad the dealers must be about missing out on that extended warranty money . Apparently the answer was “very”

VW actually had the first 10/100 ( powertrain) warranty in the business, way back in the 90s when their quality was horrid. I believe most manufacturers now have between 60k and 100k on the powertrain, but that’s honestly not hard to do.

I thought Hyundai’s warranty was really just powertrain (plus a wee bit more). This one is a true B2B warranty -- every little squeak or rattle.

Too many dealers bitched that they couldn’t sell extended warranties. LOL.

For the consumer, it nets 2 free oil changes. Prob still best to get out of the car after 50k miles anyways. Even if the inevitable problems are covered, you still need to deal with getting them fixed.

VW warranty in Australia is 5 years/unlimited kilo metres (up from 3 years in 2018) . Plus 1 year roadside assistance.

Kia on the other hand is 7 years/unlimited kilometres...and 7 years roadside assistance.

They wouldn’t have pulled the warranty back if it wasn’t costing them money. 4/50 isn’t a bad warranty- it's actually pretty good- but shortening it sends a really bad message.

“But the customer didn’t even know about the warranty when they came in!”

That seems like a perfectly reasonable reason to get rid of it. With that reasoning we should rid of catalytic converters, transmissions, engines, and anything else the customer can’t see or has no idea what it is.

For fuck's sake VWoA is the most poorly run business I have ever seen.

Its sad but this is why Volvo changed their CPO warranty too. It used to be a 7 year 100k mile warranty. Now it’s 5 years but unlimited mileage.

Volvo realized that no one was really extending the warranty beyond 7 years so F&I wasn’t making any money. So now it’s only 5 years with the option to extend it out another few years.

Really shit move.
