I have spent a lot on my problem hobby recently . Even beyond the cars, when I get into a new hobby I go all in. Just asking all of my rock climbing gear that I use maybe twice per year when the one guy I know who still does that, wants to go.
Anyway, I want to get the APR tune on my Alltrack. I already had it scheduled for next Saturday, but I pushed it back a month because I got to feeling bad about spending another lump on one of the cars. So I put that money in the joint account and told my wife to get/do something nice for herself and put the rest in the account we have for our daughter.
In researching financing options for the 1502, I opened a few accounts and made small deposits with several banks and credit unions. In addition I have a ton of stuff that needs to be sold on ebay or car forums. Sooooo my plan is to fund all mods for the VW by snatching those little bits of cash from those accounts and selling stuff. For the tune I have the added challenge of coming up with that money in a month.
I will keep the highest interest savings account open that I will use just for saving for car parts so that I’m never really sure how much is in there and it’s not directly connected to my main bank.
Right now I’m looking at $170 in the account I plan to use . I’ve got a bunch of older apple stuff on ebay. That combined with what I’ll net from closing the other accounts, I should be up around $600-700 . The issue here is time. I need $1100. Closing these accounts and getting the money will take time, and selling stuff takes time.
Anyone else have creative saving tactics? I’m talking about “cash for stuff” savings here. Idc about your portfolio, retirement, investment properties...
I put part of each pay in a savings account as a “whoops” fund. I’d love for it to be more than that, but every time I save a good bit...Whoops, we have to spend 3 grand on something
.
The last thing I do is more of an act of desperation more than a saving tactic. I do a lot of moonlighting, and I am passively but purposely very relaxed abou t invoicing /getting paid. Same with expenses at my day job, or actual paper checks that I get (from companies. I don’t hold peoples personal checks because that is a shitty thing to do). Basically , I drag my feet on taking any money that requires a little effort to get to, assuming I don’t need it right away .
So when I took the 02 for a “check over” and the bill was enough to buy a used Honda, I went “digging in the couch”. I invoiced every client, deposited every check, and turned in all of my expens es at work to soften the blow . I don’t rely on this tactic, but it has pulled me out of a bad spot more times than I can remember. Accounting is across the hall from my office, when I turned in a stack of expenses she said, “which car broke?”

I am terrible at saving money. When I have excess in the bank account I usually find something that catches my eye and buy it. It could be a chain saw or a mountain bike but yeah I’m not one to talk.
How about this zero fucks impreza?

One good way to save money is to not void VW’s excellent warranty with a tune :P

Hmm, sounds like it does void the warranty, but you can get the APR+ warranty on the tuned powertrain, which presumably is roughly as good though APR or their warranty provider seems more likely to go out of business than VW.

I’m terrible at saving money so I’m no help here. When I was single I used to save money buy surviving on water and caffeine pills, and the occasional free pizza from the Dominos I worked at. It’s also a very effective diet. And why I weigh 45lbs more than I did before I got married.

First, recognize the difference between need and want. I realize this is a car forum and we all have hobbies and interests other than paying bills and buying groceries, but a lot of the air time on this forum is spent on making poor financial decisions.
One of my favorite pieces of financial advice comes from this SNL skit. It hurts a bit, because it’s so on-the-nose, but I think a few of us around here could be reminded about how simple finances can be :

Watch what you eat & drink. Don’t eat out or buy coffee or especially alcohol at coffee shops / bars / restaurants
.
Make coffee & food at home. Either quit drinking alcohol
or downgrade to stuff sold in plastic bottles. Switching to the Poor College Student diet of Ramen and Mad Dog 20/20
for a few weeks shouldn’t cause too much long term health damage.

Maybe saving isn’t the issue?

This is actually the best advice, that I don’t follow. I have told my wife a million times that I spend way too much on going out to eat. I don’t actually know how much because I’m afraid to look.
I use 0 disc ret ion with eating and drinking out. We go out multiple times per week and pretty much all weekend. Sadly, I would venture to guess that it contends with or surpasses the mortgage.

I should have clarified. I have savings that I don’t touch. For emergencies, etc. Then I have the “whoops fund” which can usually accrue between $500 and $3k before we have an expensive vet visit, do something to the house etc...
I’m really just referring to creative ways save money that you’re intending to use to buy stuff.

Track. Everything. I’ve fallen off of this the last few months and it immediately changed how I was saving. I make a list on my phone and update it as soon as I buy something. It makes you think twice about buying something before you have to put it on “the list”

I mean like whoops we need something for the house, or there’s an expensive vet bill, or we want to have a tree taken out. You know stuff that we don’t want to pull money out of our pockets for.
For the cars I usually just take money out of my pocket or leverage a credit card if it’s a really bad one. I’m just looking for a few more places to hid money from myself so that I have it for modz

I track everything except going out to eat/drink, haha. I told another oppo the reason I don’t track it is because I know I spend waaaay too much in that department and I’m afraid to look.

In my experience, the best way to save money is by not spending it.
Practical (but extremely obvious) tip: Find a cheap hobby.
I’ve been getting more serious about trail riding on my mountain bike, and it’s been helping me save money for my next major car parts purchase simply by distracting me from wanting to spend money on car parts .
After the bike and helmet purchases, it’s an extremely cheap hobby to participate in. I f you can find a quality used bike, it can be rather cheap to start too.

I’ve recently started using Digit and it’s socked away a couple hundred bucks in the last months and frankly didn’t notice it coming out of my checking. It should end up as a nice little slush fund.
I also have an account at a credit union that gets $100 per paycheck before it hits my checking. It’s kind of a pain to get to so it makes it harder to spend which mkes it grow and it’s for things like vacations and vehicles.

How’s digit work?
+1 on the credit union. I’m using an account like that for the same reason. I can transfer to my bank account if I want, but I’m limited to something silly like $200 per day a nd the money takes a few days to hit my account.

If you moonlight a lot get an account with Azlo - it’s free, you can deposit checks through the app, and do simple invoices from it. Keeps the moonlighting money separate from the working account.

Digit is supposed to analyze your spending and pull out just enough that you won't notice it. Usually like $2-8 a day it pulls it our via bank transfer and that's how you would also put it back so you'd maybe run into the same $200 limit which is strange.

No judgement, I’m just rethinking how I spend on “unnecessaries” as my little one grows. I need to go from just paying for car things, to saving for car things and conservatively. Right now my daughter’ s wants and needs are fairly inexpensive. B efore too long there will be trips to Disney World, trips to the orthodontist, etc.
My wife is particularly supportive toward my love of cars, she’s not saying anything but I don’t want her to get to feeling like I’m taking advantage. She let me buy that 45 year old Bimmer when our daughter (our first and only ) was 5 months old with two other perfectly good cars in the driveway all of which were/are unfit for said 5 month old.

A ton of money to be saved there. We have rolled it back a little bit, but both of us like going out to dinner. Then there are those nights were neither of us feels like cooking so we go to the place up the street annnnnd there goes that $100

Just catching up to... life after vacation. This may or may not be helpful, but I put aside every penny I make in my coaching job as a “fun money” account which has funded our boat, my mountain bike, the ‘61 Ford, etc. It’s about $4k/year. Right now it’s at $500 (sad trombone) but it was around $17k before we bought the boat 3 years ago.
Ready for an adventure!
