Kinja'd!!!

I was driving around my old hometown and noticed that this old Citroën BX 19 TGD Break V an had moved from its usual spot.

While taking pictures the very kind owner came over, who told me he has owned it for 22 years (which explains why it has been around the same spot for almost all of my live) and that it has covered more than 500.000km on it’s original engine! That means he already did 5 timing belt services. The owner told me he absolutely adores it, even though it’s become a bit rough around the edges. He was playing with the thought of selling it, but the fact that it is mechanically in great shape, and doesn’t have any structural rust, and is amazing to drive holds him back. He was kind of gauging my interest after I told him I went to check out a BX before. It would make a nice parts hauler, hmm...

The owner claims this is the last remaining official van conversion in the Netherlands, as they all rusted away at the rear side windows, where the glass has been replaced by a plate that leaves a gap when it warps over time (he keeps that in check, and thus only has a minor rust spot there)

Interesting find and in a nice color !

The Finnish (tax evasion) BX Van was modified elsewhere. As you probably guess it has no rear seats. Most are with a diesel engine to maximize the tax evasion benefits. For some reason all of these are either white or red. These actually sold quite well.

I used to see similar in Holland, they have/had similar tax rules.

Ones similar to those  also existed in the Netherlands. However, this being a 93 I think it was built after a rule change, so it lacks the rear seats and windows, but has the normal roof.

Ni ce find! Not many people keep old work vehicles around that were already economically worthless 15 years and 300k kms ago.

I hope this one is saved. Maybe an upgrade to the engine, as I strongly prefer gasoline engines to old diesels.

Yeah I was very impressed by it!

It should be saved indeed, maybe a sleeper SportVan? Or some GTI power would also work. Had I not just bought the 17, I would definitely be interested in this one...

A sleeper sportsvan makes a lot of sense to me. If I were to own it I would definitely engine swap it. Get rid of that smokey 70 hp diesel. Maybe just a regular 2.0L 16V (135 hp) from the late 90s. Super cheap, slots right in, easily available, reliable, almost double the horsepower. Or, while you’re at it, the now rare 1.9 16v engine from the BX gti 16v (160 hp). Or better yet, the 306 gti6 engine. Maybe the 206 gti RC engine (180 hp)? The 2.0t that I have would be an option too, lower peak hp but more torque.

Maybe you can buy it and use it as a parts runner for the 17 ;)

A petrol swap is definitely something I would consider too. For sound reasons I would prefer the Sport engine, but a GTI engine or a plain 2.0 16v would probably be easier to find.  Although the torque of a diesel can be useful for hauling parts or a car.

I honestly did consider that... I might go back to give the owner my number in case he ever wants to sell.

Giving him your number makes sense. You can always say no.

About torque: the 1.9L diesel (no turbo) has 71 hp and 120 Nm. The generic (Xantia, early 406 and the like) 2.0 16v has 135 hp with 180 Nm. The BX 16v engine had 148 hp and 166 Nm (wi th cat) and the 2.0t 150 hp and 235 Nm. So, the turboless low hp diesel has easily the lowest amount of torque as well.
