I was driving my Datsun 240z to work and I honked and wav ed at a nice MGB today-just like a Harley wa ve . Looked like this, he waived back with a smile . My god what have I become?

The Harley Code: Respect your fellow dentist, lawyer or pediatrician who’s midlife crisis and ensuing weekend rebellion outfit and financial outlay exactly mirrors your own.
Incidentally, how taking a hand off your high powered motorcycle at highway speeds “doing what’s right?”

I get waves from the Subaru guys and the ST guys. It’s amusing and weird.

Yes that is weird. “ HEY MAN WE ARE ST BROTHERS! HEAR MY BOV!”

When I’m in the fintail I often get a little wave from any vintage car - more likely with a vintage foreign car, and an old MB almost always gives recognition. I initiate it less than half the time, but I h ave done it.
I recall last time I drove it, I got a wave from a guy in a 60s Fairlady roadster.

I always got a kick out of how bikers try to be stealthy about waving to each other.
sm70- why not Duesenberg?

It works in my dilapidated Alfa Spider, too. And not just with other hoopty sports cars. Pagoda SLs and Austin-Healey 3000s and such. We all exchange waves and sometimes a polite honk of the horn.
Same story back when I had the Saabaru. Plenty of Subarus and older Saabs alike did the wave.

I shamelessly do the “pop-up headlight salute” for anything with remotely similar vibes to my MR2. I wave to Turbo Subarus and it’s almost always reciprocated too.
The “we have common ground because we bought the same metal dino-exploding transport machine” thing is kind of silly but I can’t stop doing it...
I dunno, could put a lift kit on my MR2 so I could do the Jeep Wave as well. Should I?

It’s not just a Harley thing, it’s a biker thing. I used to wave to everyone when I rode, everyone waved back... except some of the people you are describing, though most of the Harley people were cool too.
Also, it’s no different than taking your hand off your steering wheel to adjust your climate controls, change the radio, shift gears, or wave. The gyroscopic effect keep the bike upright and stable at highway speeds.

Not sure what kind of motorcycles you have been riding, but y
ou can actually
steer with one hand.
Doesn’t
’ matter if it’s at highway speeds or
how much power the motorcycle has.
I do it all the time when I need to adjust my visor, sunglasses, zip/unzip jacket, etc.. A wave takes less time than that. Times I can’t wave, I’ll either nod my head or do nothing at all.
It’s really not that difficult.

Lifted MR2, yes but do it on the last generation so yours isn’t ruined.

Nice, I’ll make a point to waive at all foreign pre 1980's cars from now on, no matter how awkward it makes them feel.

I don’t ride a motorcycle, waving at every other person on a motorcycle got too tiring.
RESPECT.

Hmm. My coilovers have a decent amount of height-adjustability. In theory, I could max out the height (maybe add a 1-2" strut spacer at each corner for good measure), and put some 27" Jeep tires on it.
Then, if an autocross event is soon, I could just switch the wheels back to my autoX setup, and drop the ride height back to stock. Fully reversible lift kit!
Would that be acceptable if it was reversible? MR2s have lots of droop travel so it wouldn’t need much in the way of other suspension mods.

When I first bought the Jeep I felt more inclined to wave to top-down cars than bundled-up Wranglers.
Both my cars are XJs

We’re just a friendly bunch, we Orphan Car owners :)
Shamefully thinking of my comatose TVR from the same era as your Alfa...
Also my late WRX and
SAAB Turbo... waving from their
graves.

I get waves from MGB and Lotus Elan drivers when I drive my Shinsen Miata. As if I needed more confirmation that my car was inspired by theirs!
Of course,
I wave back and honk like a mad man.

in the 914 911s are hit or miss. Shocked if I get a response from a macan or cayenne. I always wave to vintage VWs, and british cars. Busses often get a kick due to the shared engine block
