Not my pic but I saw an identical unit on the road today. My first thought was that it was an impersonator (we have issues with them every few years in our area). I concluded it must be some sort of state agency like Crime Bureau or something. A little bit of googling seems to indicate maybe it has to do with mental health? In any case I’ve never seen it before and wondered if you all had.

I panic every time I see an Explorer on the road now. Even if I'm driving in a pristine manner, that initial jolt of fear still me hard.

I was dumb today. I was going the speed limit but still clenched up a little when I saw the above vehicle. However me being dumb I’m about 5-6 miles down the road and I open it up a bit. I’m WOT keeping up with a plane taking off from the runway beside the empty interstate. I come over a rise and immediately hit the brakes as I realize that the OHP car that’s sitting in the same spot is is always in on Friday’s is of course sitting in his normal spot. At this point I think I’m going to jail for sure as I’m doing a looong way into “get dragged to the clink” speeds. I still don’t understand it but, he locked me on the radar, said something in to the radio handset, and didn’t move. Granted he was sitting on the far curb of he opposite side of the interstate but still. Instantly I think he must be in contact with a unit further down the t he road. I found the corner and get off at the first intersection (unrestricted access highway thankfully). I dodged and weaves out through the country side and finally stopped the car in a sheltered spot to listen for a possible air pursuit. Nothing. I must be insanely lucky as I have no idea how I got away with that. Scared me good though.

It is most likely from a state hospital or other such organization. Much like state universities have there own police, so do most state run hospitals.

They might have just been running your tag for other issues and if you were clean, they didn’t bother. Defiantly a heart stopper though.

Look at the roof. If it has roof racks its just some asshole, if it doesn’ t have roof racks, its an asshole with a badge.

I have learned the hard way to never ever speed over a blind crest. They are police haven's. There is no leeway for avoiding a ticket when you blast over a blind crest.

To be honest the plane you were racing might have been an Statie plane. Ohio staties use small aircraft a nd he could have been waiting for it.

I have a buddy who’s dad and brother are Staties and when they use the plane they are going big or nothing.

They have been sitting and a car goes by at 15 over and the plane has radioed “not fast enough we will find another one”

Red tag means its emergency IIRC here in Ohio. And I don’t think they are equipped with traffic enforcement equipment other that plate readers

This would make sense as the plane didn’t turn off on an exit pattern and was following the road after take off. However when I turned off I went underneath and behind it. They would have instantly lost me as I went into a heavily wooded section. Surely they were waiting for a serious criminal (felony stop maybe?) or they lost me. I’m so thankful I got out but it’s just so odd. Usually OHP is pretty strict. I need to tone down doing stupid stuff. I’m getting too old for this.

I think it just means it’s a state vehicle. The ODOT cars have red plates as well.

Sometimes... I’ve definitely seen them with the roof racks. My understanding is that the standard Ford model lacks them but that police can customize either through Ford or a third-party.
