.

Told my wife I’m thinking about buying my mom’s Miata. It sits 340 days a year for the last two years and it’s getting rough. Which also means big saving plus family discount! I’ll definitely mull it over this coming year, and I’ll have to drive it a few times before making a decision.

There are many things I enjoy about the NA, but many that I did not. In addition to all the problems from sitting it now has , it also is a total stripper model, with no power anything, AC, even power steering. But to me that also means less problems over time. My memories of driving it to college include being a cop-magnet (it’s red... my mom gets pulled over often, too), and bigger vehicles either want to fuck with you or can’t see you.

S it’d be another project car, but one where I won’t be heavily invested in it actually working out. It will not need to be remotely dependable or used for anyone’s commute, since this time around I have actual reliable cars on hand.

iI don’t know... Am I nuts? I mean, in this context, not in general.

Since you have other, reliable, cars in the stable, why not turn it into a track/semi-track car? I’ve never seen you post track articles, so I don’t know if you have any interest in it, but it’s a Miata, it basically begs for it.

Do it. You can recoup a decent chunk of change selling the hardtop.

Lack of AC is rough, but manual everything else isn’t too bad. You can reach the passenger window roller without even extending your arm.

Totally anecdotal, but I've been pulled over once, and that was for tabs that I forgot to put on. And my Miata looks pretty pull-me-over-ish

Miatas without power steering are gods gift to driving.

O n a base NA with no options, what’s there to add? Power windows? Both crank handles are reachable from the driver’s seat. Power locks? You’d need an NB or newer for that, and then it only works on the passenger door on the NBs until Mazda introduced key fobs. Power steering? The car’s light enough, s tick with the OEM-size tires . A/C? You’re in the PNW, cabin heat is more important; even here in Philly it gets used only three months out of the year . Radio? Crutchfield.com. Cruise control? You got me there, it’s hard to hold the speed on a Miata during long highway stretches. That’s about it, there are no other power accessory options on NAs.

NA A/C sucked anyways (mine’s been broken for 15 years, don’t care), no P/S is actually a plus (manual racks go for big money). There’s not much to go wrong, Mazda makes all the wear parts still, and they’re simple cars with 90s Japanese mechanicals.

They are no longer a viable daily due to size, but they’re a great second car.

Come to the dark side, we have pop-up headlights.

I’d be tempted. And insurance... The monthly insurance bill, only liability, is a reminder of hose stupid-large my fleet is.
