I was talking with my buddy on the way back from the PVGP on Sunday and during the course of discussion rememberd that Chevy made a diesel Cruze in the 2nd gen bodystyle. I remembered they made it in my body style using a 2.0L VM engine, but I did some research and learned that t he 2nd Gen cars ge t the newer Opel/GM designed 1.6L turbo diesel . They even offer it with a 6 speed stick, in which case it returns 30/52 mpgs. Or they did, they apparently only offered the diesel in 2017 - 2018 with the stick. And of course they stopped making the car all together earlier this year.
Still, I was curious, so I’ve been searching for a diesel manual Cruze hatch when I noticed that several dealers have 2018 mode l s that look suspiciously new. There are several with very low mileage (under 300, some under 100 ), some still have plastic wrap in various parts, one even had a window sticker. Yet they are all listed as used cars.
Is there a point when a new car sits on the lot too long that it can no longer be sold as new and has to be sold as used?

Is there a point when a new car sits on the lot too long that it can no longer be sold as new and has to be sold as used?
I asked our local Buick dealer about that the other day, just as I was perusing their selection of 2018 TourX models. Their short answer was “as long as it was never privately titled, it’s new.”
If they took another $5k off for calendar
depreciation, I’d bite...

Dealers get paid additional incentives from manufacturers for hitting new car sales targets. As such, they will fudge numbers at the end of the month to “sell” cars to themselves to use as “service loaners” or whatever .
That’s probably what happened with these. It’s also very possible that the person placing the ad is a moran and has it listed wrong.

It hadn’t occured to me to do that to fude sales numbers, but that makes a lot of sense . Wasn’t there some big dealership chain that got shutdown, either this year or last year, for doing that, but on a massive scale?

could also be demo cars. if they’re lot poison (like a diesel manual Cruze would be) then they probably used them as demos for employees to drive for a bit, then hopefully discount them enough to get them the hell off of the lot.

True, though I found several with like 10 miles on them, seems too low for a demo. But some of them certainly could have been.

Watch the movie Fargo. That goes over dealership inventory fraud pretty well.

A car can be new even if it’s 5 years old. Odds are they were used by employees for a bit or the ads are wrong.
Check the in service date if you get serious about one - when it became “used”. That starts the warranty clock ticking, even if the car is just sitting on the lot.

There was a beautiful brilliant blue 5 door cruze at my local chevy dealer, it sat so long an employee bought it. Last I saw it was listed for $17k.

O thers have been saying similar things . Makes sense.
I’m serious about replacing my Cruze in the next year , just not sure what direction I want to go. Part of me wants to go full mullet and get a pony car (Camaro SS or Mustang 5.0) but part of me wants to double down on an ultra efficient commuter and in that case I’d probably get another Cruze, but not sure if I’d go gas or diesel.

About a year ago I was haggling with a dealer in north Jersey, they had a sedan i n that same brilliant blue that had been sitting for a while . I think they had it listed at $20k (sticker was around $24-25k) , and I would periodically e-mail their internet sales rep and bother her, and $17k was my number, but we never quite got there, and then someone bought it.

17k feels right to me for the size and quality of the car. My main issue is the horror stories I’ve heard about those 1.4 L turbo engines self destructing . They drive great and I really like the styling.

I have the 1st G en Cruze which has the Family 0 engine. I got lucky, all the really important (expensive) shit broke under warranty - turbo, VVT solenoids, water pump, and something else I can’t remember . Now all I have to worry about is keeping the PCV system happy by replacing 1 to 3 of it’s components (varrying from $50 to $ 150) every 30k. Why GM couldn’t just use a $2 disposable check valve like everyone else is beyond me.
The 2nd Gen Cruze has the newer SGE (Small Gasoline Engine) that’s a completely different architecture. It adds direct injection, gets a nice little power bump, and is supposed to be quieter and smoother. I have no idea if it’s any better in terms of reliability, but it would be hard to get much worse without being catastrophic .
I don’t know anything at all about the diesel, but I’m very curious. I’d like to replace my Cruze in the next year or so and I’m torn between getting a fun car (Camaro SS or Mustang 5.0) or doubling down on a very economical commuter, in which case I’m thinking lightly used Gen 2 Cruze, either gas or diesel, though I need to drive one first since I haven’t even sat in a Gen 2 yet.

Yeah I mostly wanted to add the bit about in service date if you’re getting serious.
I always have conflicting goals like that with cars. Ideally you get 2 cars, but money and space usually put a stop to that idea. Maybe a hot hatch can give you the right compromise? Good luck!

MAZDA3, the cruze is about 8/10ths of a mazda 3, the mazda 3 in the hatch is a fantastic car, great fuel economy and great reliability .

Thanks, I appreciate it, I will definitely check the service date .
I was actually having this conversation with my wife the other day, I just need like $50k - get a ‘16-18 Camaro SS/1LE, used Gen 2 Cruze, and a used liter bike, and I’m happy! Not sure how the HOA would feel about all that stuff parked in front of my place though

I want to finish paying off her Terrain so I don’t think I’m going to get anything till next year, so I’ve got time to make up my mind, but if I just go for another commuter car that’s definitely on the list to check out.

I have a 2017 Brown hatch in Premier trim. I really like the car. I run mid grade or premium in it. The engine does ping on regular. They are known to have a piston cracking issue. There are revised piston and an ECM flash to address any that fail. The repair can also be done in car without having to remove the engine so naturally GM slashed the labor time. All in all I am happy with my purchase. The engine is very smooth and quiet. For that matter the whole car is quiet except for a rattle in the door lock knobs on both front doors. Haven’t had the time to get it written up. Just needs strips of flocking tape applied inside the door panel opening where the lock knob exits. I would recommend this car. When I bought it was a toss up between a used 2013 Honda Accord priced 1500 dollars less or this car that was a year old and still under warranty. I took the Accord home for the weekend. It was a nice car but the used car manager cheaper out and stuck no name brand tires on it that were unacceptably noisy. I could have worked with that. The deal breaker was the radio. It was really awful. It was difficult to do just about anything. Too bad really because Honda cars really are bullet proof mechanically. Unfortunately the infotainment system was just awful. The Cruze has a nicer infotainment system. It has Android auto, color touch screen and finding and chaning settings is a little easier. I found the seats in the Cruze to be slightly more comfortable as well, but It was the radio that sealed the deal. I’m not concerned about the reliabilty because I wrench on GM cars all day everyday and has access to OEM parts at employee pricing. So full disclosure there. So far with 35k on the clock the only repairs have been and oxygen sensor. I still have the original Michelin MXMV4 tires with 5mm tread remaining on the car. I do plan on keeping this one just like the last hatch I had that was kinetic blue but It was a total loss in a collision so......... Fingers crossed. Also I did have a 2015 Cruze. It was an odd car because they refreshed the front grille for that one model year only, not including the 2016s sold only as fleet units. It was the cheapest one available with automatic transmission. It was dreadfully slow. Had the 1.8 non turbo engine. My 2017 has m7ch better acceleration. Not the fastest car around but not the slowest either. It's good. Not great, not bad but just enough. It can pass but you will have to floor it.

Thanks for all the info. I have a 2012 currently. I like it in so far as its nice, comfy, good radio. But its easily been the LEAST reliable GM I've owned, by far. That annoys me a lot, I don't want to dick around with an unreliable car. I don't know what I'm going to do to replace my current Cruze, but I may consider a Gen 2, and I appreciate you sharing your experiences.

We live in Northern VA, right outside of DC. So take my 50k and make it about 950k, and we sell our house, then we could maybe buy a “small” mansion in a non-HOA area.
At that point I'd stay where we're at, buy a C8, and invest the rest so in a few years we could have a legit mansion with a huge garage!
