People in this town were obsessed with the cross up in a hill in downtown. It was literally referred to “the cross.” But it burned up in the Thomas Fire. No one took it as a sign of the end times.
There was also Two Trees. Literally two trees on a hill. You have to trespass to find easy access to hike up there. And there’s a Cafe in town called Two Trees Cafe. One tree also burned up in the Thomas Fire.
Oh wait, you said hidden treasures? My bad, disregard.

It could have, but it doesn’t.
I don’t think the summer camp that now occupies the grounds of the former Black Mountain College has much in the way of historical stuff or an historical tour.

There is a museum on it in nearby Asheville, but that’s not quite the same thing.
Lots of off-the-wall historic type things in Asheville, but mostly catering to specific interests. There are some interesting museum and historical things down the hill in Old Fort. And this:

Gum Alley, you say? We were there last month. Yeah, it’s pretty nasty. However, I did buy and chew an entire package of Bubble Yum to make my own contribution.

It’s as exciting as the town it’s self. The article speaks for it’s self.

Given your more recent posts, one could be forgiven for thinking the entire state of California was nothing more than an apocalyptic wasteland filled with tech-bro hipster beards, micro-breweries, and wandering mobs of socialists ready to seize any private property they stumble upon.

Did you say gum alley? This is in Seattle. I walked through here on my way to a comedy club. It was disgusting.

Technically a public park, but the only entrance is hidden behind a house, leading to a long path through the woods and opening out onto a small clearing on the lake that's completely private. I've never seen anyone else here, and it's one of my favorite spots to escape the throngs on people without driving far off

I’ve witnessed a girl twerking on the gum wall at about 2AM before. That is a memory, hidden in my brain, that I will treasure forever. :p

The legendary outlaw Jesse James, robbed a bank in MN and during his getaway rode through my little home town, jumped a very wide gulch on his horse (supposedly?), and hid out in a cave until the heat died down. We also have a decent little state park here.

These aren’t as hidden as they used to be, but we have the world’s foremost coon dog cemetery and Tom’s Wall , a stone wall a man spent 30 years making in honor of his American Indian great-great-grandmother.

Belknap lookout is a hard to get to spot on the northside of Grand Rapids where you can get some pretty stunning views. From below, you see this and think it’s just some corner
But get there yourself and you’re treated to views like this:
There’s also some nice parks and a baseball field that are all well maintained. I ride my motorcycles around there often and it’s always filled with kids playing (and asking for revs and wheelies.....so you have to do it)

Kansas City’s Crossroads District has got you covered if you’re looking for a much less disgusting alleyway.
That aside, I’ve lived here too long and have too many to list, but a few quick highlights:
Colony KC / The Rino - coffee, cocktail, and live music joint opened by a guy that I went to highschool with. They’re cool with BYO food, and the area has no shortage of good options (Tay’s Burger Shack, Smokin’ Guns BBQ, Chicken & Pickle, etc.)
Prospero’s Books - Almost every major city has a cool used book store. This is ours.
Coffee - It’s not a thing most people outside KC would expect us to be good at, but we’ve got a handful of truly exceptional roasters in town, like Messenger or anything with ties to it (Filling Station, Black Dog, Crow’s, etc.), Oddly Correct , Second Best , Thou Mayest , and Blip .
Spicin Foods (formerly Original Juan’s) - Food manufacturer focused primarily on hot sauces. They produce for Pain Is Good, Da Bomb, and many others. You can sample basically anything, and if you’re feeling even more adventurous, they’ve got a rack of cheap ($2-ish) bottles of test runs and “failed” batches.

Maybe not so much “hidden” but my town has an excellent Carrol l Shelby museum has one of the Daytona Coupes
It’s all in this nondescript little building in the corner of a light industrial park about a mile from me. Still crazy to think there is that much automotive history just sitting there.

East side tavern. Home o f the Simpson’s bar . It is pretty much a mirrored copy of it and the bartender when Groening went to college at evergreen state looks just like Moe. You can see tons of duff stuff on the walls, letters of appreciation from Groening, etc. The building is family owned so the beer is super cheap. I know you don’t drink anymore, but if you like the Simpsons or Futurama, this is an awesome spot.
