Picked one up at Target and have been playing it for wayyyy too long tonight
. Yeah the cords are short, there’s no USB adapter, and a couple of the game choices are a little esoteric but most of the big hits are there, with
Gran Turismo being the obvious exception.
It’s beautifully packaged, and well built, with the original style digital controllers . It does come with an HDMI cable. A frikkin’ steal at $20.

Definitely a steal at $20. I run autobleem on mine so I can play my whole library of ps1 games.

I guess I’m probably not the target market for this device since I still have all of my old consoles - 2600, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PS3, Xbox, 360. I would probably say that the PS3 has spent more time playing PS1 games, especially Colin McCrae Rally 2.0, than PS3 games. I bought it primarily as a BD player, but use it more as a PS1 with HDMI.

They’ve got limited stock around here, I’d check online and maybe order from the site.
I was too lazy to drive to the far Target,
so I had mine shipped to the local store and it s
howed up in a couple of days.

Ha yeah, I still have a PS2, so I still have a bunch of PS1 games, but this had a lot of the RPGs and a few of the classics that have gotten expensive. I mean Final Fantasy will set you back $20 for a used copy these days.
There are a ton of great PS1 games - it was such a huge step change. One of my favorites is this one - it’s pretty short, but it’s kind of an ur-GTA3 open world destruction/driving
game:

About 20 years ago I had a co-worker that sold little devices that allowed you to play CD-R copies of games, as well as selling the pirated games for $1-2 each. I bought a pile of them, and probably still have them around somewhere, but I don’t know if I’d ever be able to get them to work. I’d probably be better off with an emulator.
One of the interesting finds in that stack of games was a Japan-only game called Pepsi Man. There was some full motion video at the beginning of it and I was surprised to see that this footage was shot at a small shop about two blocks from my home in Los Angeles. Small world...
A year or two ago I bought a dead 360 for $20 that apparently has a modified optical drive. It came with a stack of copied games and a bunch of good accessories, and it was really those accessories and controllers that I was after. From what I’ve read MS does something to key the optical drive to the console to prevent copying and I really don’t care enough about this to go through the hassle to see if I can actually use these copies.

Oh man, I think I might have to get an emulated copy of Pepsi Man.
With the mod you should just be able to play the games. Microsoft tried some tricks (banning modded units from XBox Live and there were a couple of updates that would brick consoles with the mod). They’ve probably given up though, so you could always try to swap the drives into a working Xbox.

That’s it! Right at the corner of Manchester and Avition/Florence. It was an auto upholstery place that specialized in convertible tops but for decades now has been a smog check shop. It’s still standing after all these years...

There should be a plaque on the wall immortalizing the place. I don’t see a soda machine there anymore, but given the neighborhood they probably had to move it indoors because of vandals/thieves; at least there’s not a Coke machine in its place. The once-abandoned train tracks near there, now repurposed for a light rail line instead of heavy freight, was a major homeless encampment. All freight coming from the harbor miles and miles away used to have to loop around the west side to get to downtown, and the grade crossings seriously delayed traffic all over the place. They put in a straight shot from the harbor to downtown, along the LA river I believe, that eliminated those problems and shortened the route considerably. The only downside was that they got rid of the last operational wig-wag signals that were still in use when those lines were closed. They’re probably unsafe, so this was actually a good thing.

That’s what I’m doing with mine. Time to load up on all my favorites from back in the day.
