Kinja'd!!!

When I was just 9 years old I saw Battle Royale on a bootleg DVD (this was back before uTorrent was useful) and it scarred me gravely, more than the original The Ring that I watched prior and Ju-On: The Grudge two years later.

In 2014, I saw it again with classmates on a whim, and FOOKIN’ HELL the whole thing was stunning and squalid, a movie we all enjoyed but kept us thinking aloud. Two years after that, I watched it again while sailing on the net, and after seeing Nerdwriter’s analysis of it, I finally saw the brilliance of this picture.

Now I’m seeing this movie as soon as this post goes live, not to live out some nostalgic craving, but more to see if this is a kind of story that can be told in another way, with a different subject, from a different perspective. These are kids, after all, and in my quest to late-push my coming of age I look to make new tales of people discovering who they are. Maybe I can see it here, maybe not. Recommend me films or shows that may let me bolster my goal.

Good movie that

Had to sit me daughter down for it as she thought the hunger games was an original idea

That could not be allowed :p

Whoa. What did she think of the film afterwards? I assume you had to explain some of the more macabre parts to her— unless she is a pre-teen (12-15).

Go and find a couple of Rolf De Heer movies from Australia, both with an indigenous outlook; Ten Canoes and; The Tracker. His first film, Bad Boy Bubby, is also quite a thing.

And then there is ‘ Romper Stomper’ ... featuring a young and highly strung Russell Crowe.

She liked it but she was 13 then so I didn’t have to explain much

And it lowered her opinion of the hunger games

So win win :p

Here’s to exposing kids to shocking films to teach them about life! *raises glass*

Kamikaze Girls might fit the bill. It’s not nearly as polished of a film, but it’s a very unique (and pretty damn funny) take on that sort of coming-of-age / self-discovery genre.

You first give them Akira ,   Your Name and a random JoJo season, then make them sit through the entirety of Cowboy Bebop , Initial D , Macross , Haruhi Suzumiya , Evangelion and/or Attack on Titan , then once they’re at an age where they’re learning WW2, make them watch Grave of the Fireflies before washing them off with the complete works of Hayao Miyazaki. From there, watch them be ruined by isekai and waifu idol shows.
