There is a yamaha TDM850 for sale. Not *too* far from me. For cheap. I can’t contain myself. Looking at this with 2019 eyes you think “Wow, it’s a BMW gs competitor.....woooo.” But look through 1992 eyes and see that this is one of the bikes that invented the “adventure” bike. Also this has a 10-valve crossplane parallel twin but is sized for my frame.
It’s rare. It was a sales flop. It’s kinda ugly. There are plenty of “better” bikes. It’s pure hipster bait. And I don’t care.
I LOVE IT.
I’m riding out on saturday to see it if all goes well. I am soooooooo antsy right now though. Like the KLR, it isn’t perfect on paper. I don’t care. I want it. I want it now.

You assume things will break.
This is not a triumph.
And I am not Jake.
Ergo, it will be fine
(in seriousness, it has many corporate parts and a decently strong aftermarket. I think my old nighthawk was harder to find parts for)

I disagree about it being ugly. I think it looks really cool. Way cooler than any 80's or 90's Japanese sport bike. By a long shot. Do it!

I agree. I think on a p ersonal level it is amazing and I love it. I’m just saying if others find it ugly or dumb, I hear them, i just don’t care....

I like the look of the TDM more, but I’ve got no clue which is the better bike. In any event, sounds like you’ve got a fallback option.

Yeah I’d rather have the TDM but the SV1000 is right up there on my list of bikes I’d like to own.

I’m jealous. I ran across three new-old-stock TDMs sitting at a dealer in South Texas a few years ago. I couldn’t convince my wife that my need for one fit within our budget.

I think it’s a great looking bike, but put it in fine company of some equally sexy Japanese sports bikes, mostly Hondas. I love the dual, round headlight look.

Didn’t know these existed until just now. Quick read up on them says that it’s important to make sure the carbs aren’t borked, and difficult to get them right if they are .

I is precisely because it is a better bike that I don't want it if I can get the tdm. But the SV1k is a nice second place.

I had one, long time ago. It’s a fantastic bike with a soulfull engine. Sure it’s less powerfull/slower than most twins nowadays, but it’s plenty fast and full of character. Dead reliable too. I rode mine all across Europe, including a round trip from the French Alps to a beach town in Portugal, al l at indecent speeds ... good days.
Buy it !

With this you’ll have no need for your Triumph Trophy. I’ll take it. :p

That’s your response to everything I post! I look at a new bike? Sell the trophy. I get a fiero? Sell the trophy. I have a moment of existential dread over the inherent meaninglessness of the concept of time? Sell the trophy.
Not all of life is made better by me selling you the trophy, fellow amorphous collection of matter.

*Checks post history* Sweet fuck you’re right. :O I’m sorry.
Well if it’s any consolation, I totally support this TDM purchase! I didn’t even know such a thing existed before you posted about it.
Though, I still feel I need to experience a TW200 or a KLR one day...should one ever fall into my budget range.

Its fine, you don’t literally respond with that, and I haven’t posted about existential dread before so you definitely didn’t respond to a non-bike post with it lol.
Honestly, the KLR 250 might be the sweet spot if you can find one. But the tw will always be a personal fave due to it riding like an old mini bike I had as a kid, and my KLR is just stupidly simple to live with.
Plus the TDM would match my fiero.

Hehe, fair point! :)
I really dig the gauges of the TW200. I would also like to try out an offroady bike that you know...is younger than 1972. But they command stupid prices out here. I see the occasional KLR 250 and even 600 show up, but during those times I was looking for something else.
But those BMWs and Triumphs remain unicorns in my price range. One day!

Oh see I don’t. The headlights look cute, not in a bad way. But those bikes as a whole just don't do it for me.
