Shopping for Toyota Sequoias:

Kinja'd!!!

They seem nice. Basically a Tundra SUV, right? Bonus points for being able to tow stuff.

05-07 is the sweet spot for these. Those years had a proper center differential for full-time 4wd/awd. The others did not.

Very tall, very truck-like, you can fit 7 people in a pinch, had adequate power, total gas-hog (my bro was getting like 13-14). He had zero problems, though.

Very squishy brakes and very numb steering, even for a giant SUV (same issue with the Tundra).

Yeah, any SUV thoughts I might have will probably disappear when I drive one and remember how much I hate driving SUVs. I learned to drive on my parents’ Expedition and as soon as I moved on to other cars I hated driving that thing.

Oof, I thought I read they were rated similar to my STI, but that’s way worse. Back to imaginary shopping for a Volvo V90, I guess.

They are nice.  For my money, if you didn’t need the 3rd row very often, I would buy an GX or LX though.  Japan built > Texas Built.  Sorry Texas.

Watch the frames, if you live in the rust belt.

Interesting, because I don’t need or want a 3rd row. My ideal would be a CX-5 that could tow 5000 lbs and get 30 mpg highway.

Toyota makes durable vehicles and simple powertrains for their trucks , in exchange for awful fuel economy.

Ever since my Kia Sedona trip in Australia, I have been eyeballing minivans. The Sedona was awesome, even though its steering wheel was on the wrong side...

Thankfully, no. Snow is rare here in the PNW and they usually don’t use salt.

I love me some first gens;

Second gens get pretty chunky, plus the 5.7 is thirsty..

HH FP is spot on, it’s a North American platform and doesn’t compare to the Cruiser bloodlines.. W edged somewhere in there between a 4Runner and a 200 series..

Our 2018 GMC Terrain Denali is only 2 rows, pulls 3500lbs and returns high 20's on the highway (I’ve nursed it above 30 a few times) . It’s pretty close. The Acadia can be configured with 3rd row delete. With the 3.6L V6 and towing package it gets 17/25 MPG and tows 4,000lbs. So that’s even a bit closer.

The CX-5 is one of the vehicles we cross shopped and I really liked it. The two big let downs were lack of towing capability (I think it can pull 1500 lbs?) and it felt a bit underpowered. I know the new Signature trim adds the turbo engine, but not sure if it towing capacity has been increased.

What about a Telluride/Palisade?

We’re about to get a Dodge Grand caravan, used under 10k. Strong engine and great cargo capacity.  Plus it can double as a tow vehicle.

First gen or second? I like the first gen on principal and exterior, but didn’t like the interior. Its minor, but the column shifter bothered me. Don’t know why. You also have the frame rust issues, so look for one that has either never been in salt or had the frame replaced already. I would get it inspected in any regard, as they rust from the inside out

The second gen is dated (even the 2019), but I like it. Unfortunately, it has an weird cross bar over the front seats, and my head touches, eliminating it from contention. If the seat wasn’t so damn high or lowered more, I’d likely own one, but its no go at the moment. There is so much damn space in the second row, its amazing, and the back can hold a ton. The kicker is, its only 3" or so longer than my wife’s Sienna. It seemed so huge when it was introduced, but its not bad now.

The new Telluride is a very nice and capable vehicle. They’re flying off the lots for a reason. If you want a wild card with towing though, maybe consider a loaded 2013-2018 Hyundai Santa Fe. The three row ones aren’t super big externally, they can tow up to 5,000 pounds with a tow package, are still in warranty in case of problems (which hopefully shouldn’t happen), and are blessed with Hyundai depreciation.

Edit: Here’s a good example.  https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/757752036/overview?aff=share_other

if you are looking for greater than teen fuel economy you are barking up the wrong tree with any Toyota truck.

I’ve loved my gx though. same exact drivetrain but in a higher state of tune (if you choose to use premium) and the self leaving rear suspension and adjustable shocks make towing a breeze.

you'll get 20 mpg tops on the highway

Yeah, the GX does look pretty nice. This is all hypothetical for a few years anyway, but I like to do my shopping at least 10 years in advance ;)

I was looking for a truck/suv that would be a good winter car, be able to carry shit, and town a car if needed.

Pros: reliable, available, BIG.
Cons: 13mpg.

I had a rental Tahoe recently and the first gen sequoia is WAY bigger inside. Even with the third row in it, the S qeuoia can easily fit a few full size suit cases. There is like 3ft of space behind the third row.

Watch out for the frames. Mine was replaced under a recall just before I bought it. The dealership had dozens of frames in their back lot. Also, these have a timing belt, so watch out for that.

If you want to tow something heavy, it’s been recommended to me that you get some helper airbags to put in the rear springs. Cheap and easy to install.
