I’ve been noticing a steady stream of cars around me that have stickers on them with the owner’s instagram handle. It’s almost always a lightly modded mainstream performance-ish car, just like this 86 I noticed today. I’m in the DC burbs. Who else has spotted this trend, on what kind of cars, and where?

I’ve seen this for at least 5 years it seems. But 5 years ago I was still in LA and that seems like the perfect place for this crap. Definitely common everywhere at this point though! Pretty sure I saw it in the Philippines earlier this year too but haven’t dug through my street photos from that trip to confirm

I saw it on one, looked it up, and there were only 2 posts. I was confused, figured I’m too old to understand, and walked away, muttering under my breath about kids these days

Yeah, few years now. It’s on everything from lightly modded cars, to full builds.
The Brz and Gti seem to be the most frequent offenders

Right, because a Toyota 86 on stock rims with tint and an exhaust really accomplishes that objective.

There are quite a few in WA. Mostly mainstream cars. I’ve saved a few on some really interesting builds/ adventure rigs just to see if they had any build details.

Yea. Its been here in SoCal for awhile now. What with all the night races and wanna be drifters tearing up industrial parks and valley canyons at night. Whenever you see (or hear) a Z, GT86, Genesis Coupe etc, pretty much any bro ricer there’s bound to be an ig name on the back.

There hasn’t been a proper “scene” like that in DC since the late 90s/early 00s. There were a ton of illegal street races that happened on a highway near an under construction, new suburban metro station that was going to be the new end of that line.
There was also a huge basically-nightly meetup in the parking lot of a Barnes & Noble that’s right by my house (and still open, shocker!) that I used to hit up all the time. All kinds of cool cars and bikes there and I was one of the regulars with my ’92 Integra GSR.
Now there’s just Katie’s C&C and the smaller other C&C’s around the various corners of the burbs but none of that scene kid stuff. Or if that does exist I’ve aged out of the demo.

My carspotting buddies and I have them on our cars, but we at least have reasonably large IG accounts to back up the hubris (20K-50K followers) .
I n most cases, we only post photos of exotic hypercars instead of our mundane regular sports cars . It’s just a free billboard to maybe attract a few extra followers at Cars&Coffee.

That’ s crazy I didn’ t even think DC would have something like that.
But as everyone knows cars are big here so a lot of this stuff happens literally every night. Especially if you live in the burb’s like I do, you can just sit and listen in the distance as ricers duke it out on freeways and muscle cars tear u the empty streets.
Business parks will be street races or meetups as well and you will see the evidence in the mornings of burnout marks and donut marks in the streets . Some cities have begun fighting back, like my hometown. In w arehouse areas or business park areas that have long empty streets , cities have begun installing big ass speed bumps to curtail racing . Its helped by they just go somewhere else.

I’m not being pedantic, I meant that the IG handle stickers are effectively a direct line to the driver that other drivers can use like a How’s My Driving sticker.

One thing the DC area in general lacks is sprawling industrial areas.
But back in the 90s/00s before the economic development really blew up here and property values got out of control, there were some mostly-abandoned parts of DC that weren’t too violent, and the aforementioned “Metro” as everyone called it.
T he suburbs were very much boring suburbs and not the super dense rich areas they are now. So the kids from the burbs whose parents had a little money and could hop up their cars had nothing better to do and would go street racing. Or the 20/30somethings who could still find cheap places to live would dump a bunch of money in their cars. Modded cars were everywhere.
After F&F came out it flooded the scene with idiots that attracted too much police attention. That killed a lot of it, because there were really not that many spots so they were easy to overrun once word got out. By 2002 it was starting to die out. And then once all the traffic cameras started going up and everything got more and more developed that really killed it.
All those old Mischief videos —that was the DC car scene at the time. And a couple dudes I knew were like, research subjects for the original Midnight Club game. This dude Dustin used to roll up to the B&N where I hung out and sell DVDs out the trunk of his yellow Mazda MX-6 with an Erebuni body kit that was on the cover of the game.

Thanks for the info I had no idea DC had a scene like that. But after what you described it would make sense.
After F&F came out it flooded the scene with idiots that attracted too much police attention. That killed a lot of it, because there were really not that many spots so they were easy to overrun once word got out.
This happened here too and for the most part changed the scene in general. Douchebags started to want to pull stunts and be dumbasses, attracting unwanted attention by local PD and sometimes the Feds if they had JDM vehicles. Stakes started getting hire while driving became more bold and dangerous and there you have it, all the fun was gone for awhile.

The limited trim BRZ came with keyless entry and push button start since the car first came out. Various trims of the FRS have also been graced with this feature, though it’s been less consistent since the FRS was
meant to be the more “basic” variant.
