I just replaced the fuel pump last weekend. After doing a litany of other work to try to solve my hard starting/rough idle I think I’ve finally conquered it. The old pump wasn’t holding pressure, and the new one works so well that it exposed some leaky fuel line connections (yay).

It now starts after less than a second of cranking which is something I’ve never had in the 3 years I’ve owned it. Literally I don’t even hear the starter working before the thing roars to life.

The new headers sound great, the revamped ignition system is sparky af , and its the first time since I’ve owned it that I’m not nervous to drive it somewhere. Life is good.

I’ve always liked these early R ange R overs. On some level, I slightly regret not picking one up about 10 years ago when they were worth basically nothing. I might have been able to swallow the parts and my time costs to keep one going had I not paid much for one.

I almost pulled the trigger on one from a used car dealer in town about 10 years ago. It was rust-free southwest example that still had at least some paint left on it on non-horizontal surfaces . It had something like 120k on it. It was a leaky as one expects, but otherwise generally as sound . Most of the electrical accessories worked. It ran well, until it didn’t. It died on the extended test drive after the alternator gave it up and the battery didn’t hold out long enough to get all the way back . I walked back to the dealer, gave them the key and told them where it was. T hey didn’t take my low-ball offer of like $1500 (they were asking 5k, or something along those lines) , which I thought was pretty generous for a truck that didn’t run.

The only reason why someone would buy one is because they look so cool. I bought mine out of a farm field in January 2016 for $2,200. It had been sitting for 7 years with occasional starting according to the PO. It was is OK shape but needed extensive rust repair. Most of the interior bits were ok, and the body panels are mostly straight. The reputation they have is well deserved. Unless you get one that has been meticulously maintained, you’re gonna be turning a wrench more often than you’d like.

They’ve definitely been climbing in value recently, with semi-ratty ones going for 5 figures. I still wouldn’t sell mine, especially after all the work I have into it. Its a fun car to tool around town in and I get a lot of compliments on it.

Well in Europe they have Isuzu diesel swap kits for when the engine is toast, a few years ago I was going to find the two door in Canuckistan or somewhere and do the swap. It’s the same Isuzu/Chevy diesel in the NPR box trucks, very good.

My mechanical mentor had been a Land Rover dealer tech  when these were new, so when later on he owned his own indy shops there were always a few of them around from customers that followed him over the decades . I turned some wrenches on them occasionally. I can respect a lot of the engineering on them, even if the execution often left something to be desired. The ultimate capabilities of these trucks and the suspension travel they have is damned impressive. It is unfortunate that probably 2% of the people that bought these trucks ever used even a fraction of their stock capability.

They were very innovative for their time. First SUV ever to have 4 wheel disc brakes. The EFI system is surprisingly robust and efficient for the time. The suspension travel, as you mentioned, is fantastic. It gives it a luxury car magic-carpet ride feel, but allows for great articulation off road. Always keeping the tires on the ground where they belong.

I’m excited to get it off road more now that it runs reliably.

*KNOCKS ON ALL OF THE WOOD*

I’ve only done a few little jaunts off the pavement, and it certainly lives up to the hype.

She’s beautiful mate.

I hope you get many many more years of enjoyment out of her.
