Anybody need any auto parts?
Starke, FL, 1940
Because Florida had a warm climate and a lot of vacant land available, it was ideal for the building of military bases and training soldiers. In the 1930s, there was a tremendous growth of military estab-lishments throughout Florida. Florida soon had 172 military installations, ranging from both extremely large to relatively small camps. Two of the larger complexes were !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , established near Starke, and the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. All parts are suitable for all cars, given a big enough machining and welding budget.

I suspect the car at left is a ~38 Buick, and a 33-34 Ford behind the bicycles.

Put a luggage tag on it and see what happens.

Nice. But can you ID the bicycles?

Given the Western Auto Store, I bet there’s a Western Flyer in the mix, probably a Schwinn in there to o.

Hmm, so I think the building on the right might be the Post Office (pre-addition):
That would make this location the site of the current Florida Theatre:
There are a couple problems with that though. One is that the Art Deco theater seems likely to be pre-1940, the other is that the theater is number 101 rather than 100 (and would be 101 even if it was listed on the other street), so who knows. Maybe there’s another building in the same style as the post office around, but I didn’t see one.

Also note:
Definitely not the same location though.

I was surprised to see that WA went that far back in history.

Weird, my mother grew up in Starke, FL in the 50's and 60's. She remembers being in high school when integration came about. She said recently that the road she grew up on is still a sand road.

Camp Blanding is still a very large and active Florida NG base and national training center.
