Yikes. It’s a nice car but not $90,000 nice. I could buy a M2 and a E46 M3 with change to spare.

That + buy ZCP wheels, CSL boot and rear valance + interior mods and be about 90% of this car. Who cares if it’s OEM parts, it’s still a 50% replica of a car that never came in LSB or manual.

It’s not BaT, it’s the techbros/financebros/trustfundbros who seek to emulate boomers in no doubt booze or other substance-fueled bidding wars. A few more tax breaks ought to make things really fun.

This was just some random BMW guy out west. I remembered his name from when I was on the M3 forum years ago. I live like half a mile from EAG too though, lol

That car is hotter than the garbage you speak of. When I have a 10 car garage and 9 cars I could see a 90k LSB E46 to fill the 10th slot.

BAT isn’t, the blind fanaticism of this particular car is. I am a massive BMW fan and having driven an E46 M3 I see perfectly why they are still very well valued.
This isn’t a 90k car.

I agree with you . I’m not sure why an auction site is to blame for how much people are willing to overpay for a car. It’s an auction. It’ll sell for whatever the bidders want to bid.

I think it’s too much, but I’m not going to tell somebody how to spend their cash. My wife thinks cars are mostly silly anyways.

Th at sucker is fairly rough (no rear seat, no A/C, cracked paint, rust) and not road legal in a lot of the country (n o cats). Good idea, half executed.

I think the biggest negative of BaT is helping to create a new breed of flippers/curbstoners/speculators who make it hard for enthusiasts to find things themselves.
If the overmonied want to overpay, fine - it’ll come down eventually.

No fucking way. There is something behind that sale number. That is good CSL money. Not some half clone that doesn’t even have the best CSL parts. God I need some of the drugs they are on.

I think t his is the next muscle car price boom. All the good modern driver’s cars are being bought up, speculated future values are raising current prices and bumping them out of many casual enthusiasts’ reach. Buy now, if and while you can.
I don’t think BaT is wholly to blame here but it is certainly enabling this jumping of the shark.
I should buy an e46 M3...

Fair deals do slip through now and then, but often also don’t meet reserve.
I think overall the site is not a boon to the hobby nor enthusiasts, but I have to blame the bidders more than the venue.

Kind of like the shrink of the middle class, most of the good modern drivers cars are being raised out of the affordability of the crowd that grew up with them. I remember lusting after E46,E39M’s, 996 turbos, etc. when I was younger. I’d say I’m doing pretty well at 25 and I still can’t imagine paying what I’m going to have to pay for one in 2-3 years

4 0-50 year old Boomers bought the cars they desired in high school. Now 40-50 years old Xers have the money to buy the cars they dreamed about owning.

It is a net positive. Automakers pay attention to this stuff, too. Look what Porsche did when 997 GT3 prices started going insane after they dropped the manual from the 991 GT3. They released the GT2 (to massive, unmet demand) , then the 911 R, and then brought the manual back in the 991.2.
Hopefully BMW will see the sales and actually build the “Pure” version of the next M3/4 , and keep the M2 alive and well, and other automakers will cater to the enthusiast market as well. There is clearly money to be made if they do it right!

Unfortunately, that doesn’t do much for those of us more interested in vintage material.
With a wave of veteran cars on BaT lately, I expect the overmonied late boomer/early Xer set to drive up the price of brass cars next.

Unless, of course, some of the demand shifts from older, interesting cars to new, interesting cars. There’s only so much money to be made & spent on cars in a given market (at times it can seem there’s no limit...).
Just wait for the recession and then scoop things up from the folks that overextended themselves or set their reserve too high in the good times.

Precisely.
They’re starting to trend upward but I think the E36 M3 is still the bargain of the 90’s group of said cars, even the US spec. You could probably buy a good one now, drive it, maintain it and enjoy it, and sell it in 5-10 years and still make a profit, all costs considered.
GT-Rs are a bit further up the cost food chain but there is probably a good amount of headroom in R32s and R33s (R34s are so fabled that I think they’re overpriced even before they’re legal to import to the US).
If I had money to blow I’d probably hoard a bunch of those cars.

But the E36 was never desired (especially here in the States) as greatly as the E46. Definitely a bargain, and prices will climb. Definitely a good purchase if you find a good, fairly low mile example.
Are there any unmolested Evo 8s left on earth?
Would love an R33, but not sure if I could live with RHD.

E36 M3s were never that desireable but that’s only in comparison to the Euro model. It was de-contented for the sake of improving sales, at which it succeeded and in that respect it did end up being a desirable car.
Now it’s getting its own nostalgic desirability bump from the 80’s kids (and maybe early 90’s kids like myself) and finding its own audience that appreciates it for what it is.
The Evo is another good call. The 8s are 9s weren’t sold here in Canada and I wish they were. I’ve thought about bringing one up from the states and would still like to someday. Hopefully I don’t, and haven’t already, missed the boat on that one.
RHD is my issue on GTRs as well. If LHD was as comparatively plentiful as RHD for GTRs here I’d have one already. An R33 is something I could sell to someone in the states in a couple of years for a profit pretty easily. 15 year import rule FTW.

It’s definitely a great option for someone who wants to pick up a nice, special car between $10-15k.
Ugh... why can we have that here?!! (15 year rule)

i wouldnt blame BaT for these prices. obviously there are just people out there with money to burn who want these cars. its not like BaT is selling them directly
