Remove your mothafockin “clutch delay valve”! I have always had a small to medium sized beef with factory VW/Audi manuals. Shifters are plasticky and I’ve always had to be uncomfortably slow with the clutch pedal particularly N>1, 1>2 shifts. Removing this tiny plastic piece made a world of difference.
Ittybittytitty
I posted about this early in the week and I was on the fence about it. We did my buddy’s 13' Golf TDI. The CDV housing on his car was unable to accept a speed bleeder, which I now know, sucks. We TD’d his and he loved it. So on to mine which does accept a speed bleeder and it took maybe 15-20 pumps. Also amazing. I think down shifts are the most noticeable gain, in that I can execute them the same way I do on the M3 or 1502. N to first and first to second shifts feel much more natural. Clutch feel is still light but I can yank out the spring near the pedal and see how that feels.
“Bumperdillo” “Installed”
I also conquered my fear of bleeding. My best friend is at least 3 notches better than I when it comes to wrenching, and he ran the show but I did the work. It worked out perfectly because I got to do it with and without a speed bleeder, I got to see it from both sides (feel on the pedal side, and seeing the bubbles on the valve side), I learned that it is really a two person job, and I did it successfully twice.
I’ve done a valve adjustment on my M3 while half in the bag. (I did check them again before I put it back together...sober) but only one was out of spec. However I have been terrified of touching anything with hydraulic fluid. Even my inde mech has asked me why I don’t bleed the brakes on my own when I bring it in after I’ve done the pads and rotors. I’m just like, “I’m scurred, bro”
I’ll be yanking this out of my wife’s Forester (assuming it has one as I don’t like it’s clutch due to its similar feel) and the M3 even though that one has never bothered me.
Happy hot ass weekend.

I don’t think the old clutches had CDV’s? Don’t remember anyone talking about them on my ‘00 Audi S4. And I don’t have complaints about the S4 or the ‘98 Forester clutches. Or I don’t know what a decent clutch feels like?
Get one of these. Makes bleeding brakes a one person job that’s easier than doing it
with two people without it. They probably
(maybe?
)
have clutch adapte
rs too

Its def a newer car thing I don’t think any of my early 00s Subarus had em. The clutch in our 17' forester feels like the alltrack used to except a little mushier

VW uses the same reservoir for the brakes and clutch buts it's unclear of pressure bleeding the clutch is possible and I can't remember, it's been a long time since I've done a clutch and bad to bleed it.

It was easy enough with the speed bleeder. I’m going to get a power bleeder for brakes now that I’ve broken my cherry. The M3 needs fronts and a flush before too long. My wife’s forester will too.
I think I actually could get that valve back in by the way. It does not look directional and it just sits in the housing underneath the bleeder. I doubt I'll be doing that though as I love how it drives now.

If I remember I’ll send you a link to the one I have which I really like.
I’m trying to figure out if my MKVI has one, but I’m coming up short. All the searches come up with is the MKVII, plus, I have never had a problem shifting in mine after six years.

Is the Forester the 6 speed? The standard way to improve the clutch feel on the 6 speeds is to remove the helper spring on the pedal.

Yes it is. I will try that. I’m going to try the spring out of the Alltrack too, I keep forgetting to go take it out.

Cable clutch gang reporting in
Granted my car is about two decades older than yours and has maybe half the power but, no delay valve

+1 for cable clutches. My 02 is two decades older than yours.
I think it was mk4 or 5 when VW started with them.

Yup. Had this done to my 16 GTI 6MT, along with removing the clutch return spring. Makes a huge difference in shift quality.
Going to replace shifter bushings soon as well.

Mk3 VR6 cars came with 02a transmissions and a hydro clutch. My 2.slows have 020 transmissions, cable clutches. When I was driving the Mini Moke (see my post history), the slave cylinder stuck with the clutch open. I kind of wish it had had a cable clutch so we wouldn't have been stranded! My friends say the hydro has a better feel, but I like the cable. It feels great to me.

Aw man the Mini Moke is one of my all time favorites. I bet it’s a blast to drive.

Ah, it, um, actually... I’m gonna be honest, it... it sucks to drive. Having been in a normal Mini and having driven the Moke (none of the museum’s Minis are roadworthy at the moment, but give it a few weeks), the teeny tiny pedals
, while good for heel-toeing, are kind of annoying in the Moke. Couple that with the weird as hell seating position (the steering wheel is sort of like a bus, canted maybe 30° from the ground) and high ride height and suddenly you can’t corner really and it’s hard to control. But, you do get great looks from people and feel cool driving it. But actually driving it? Maybe not. Maybe in the environment it’s meant for (beaches, beach towns, dunes, not a lot of traffic, etc.) it would be great, but driving it on normal roads in traffic? Kind of awful. We baja’d it across a hundred feet or so of grass once, and it handled that pretty well, but pavement is not its strong suit.

Yea in my mind I saw myself cruising shirtless at the beach surfboard in the passenger seat. I should have clarified, haha. I t probably feels awesome to drive, but doesn’t feel awesome to drive.

Yes, being a passenger is much more pleasant than being the driver. The driver’s
seat is very cramped, and passenger’s seat isn’t much better. But on the 4 seat models (they could be had with 2 or 4) the back seat is great! Lots of leg room.

I'm thinking I might have to pull the spring when I get my Corolla but in a way I actually really like the crazy light clutch in it.
