I remember a time not too long ago when original Shelby Mustangs were raking in huge bucks at the Barrett-Jackson auction. And well... they still are. But another big sale has me even more confused.

I know that stock MKIV Supras are bringing in amounts of money that seems unreasonable to me. But I never thought I’d see the day when a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! with 70,000 miles outsells an original !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

For reference, here’s the GT500 that got beat out by a lightly-modded 2-owner Supra:

Yikes.

The collector car market has cycles ... usually there’s a generational bent to the buying except when it comes to the ultra-expensive or rare cars. Right now the children of the 80's and 90's are coming into money and are buying what they thought was cool then.

I expect Miami Vice style snow candy white  AMG Benzes to start climbing soon.

Also watch for 1980 to 1995 4x4 vehicles to start appreciating. Toyota pickups are going to be insane!

The Supra is coming into a popularity bubble thanks to the new one coming out. They'll drop again in a few years once Toyota lets it sit on the market unchanged for several years.

I always got the impression that people who buy cars at BJ were morons. Bring a Trailer for people who haven’t figured out  how to use the internet.

It seems like everyone at barret jackson overpays significantly. Plus there is auction fees on top of the hammer price. Screw that shit.

But you don’t get that adrenaline rush buying a car the normal way! And they give you free beer to weaken your judgment ( Mecum does, presume the others do too).

Totally worth the premium.

Well, worth it if you’re a moron with too much money anyways.

The amount of crap that goes across the block at BJ is amazing. Anyone that buys anything there without getting ALL the info on the car is an idiot. Making something shin y is easy-was this car a rebuilt wreck with the wrong block in it? Was reported stolen in 1974? Full of Bondo? They don’t say that stuff on tv. I work in a resto/classic repair shop 15 miles from Mohegan Sun -where they have an auction. We just got done fixing a 65 GTO from LAST year that a guy paid too much for. The motor was so tight, you couldn’t turn it over with a breaker bar once hot!

There’s free beer at BJ? I always have to pay ballpark prices for beer there.

Not sure about BJ, but I went to a Mecum auction and they had an open bar for certain people. I think it was the “gold member bidders” or some stupid thing. Had seats closer to the block too.   Don’t think it was all bidders (I was a spectator and bought my own beer too).

It’s a great racket for the owners of the auction knowing how many people have more money than common sense.
