More like anti-rear engine, the opposite of a 911. I imagine that with the turbo 5 and FWD there was probably so little weight on the rear tires that it could do a stoppie if you weren’t careful.

I think in the obsessive way German engineers design cars they were counting on 4 passengers and some luggage, which would greatly enhance the balance.

My first car, a 1977 VW Dasher Wagon, had the same drivetrain layout, with nearly the same horsepower - a whole 76 in my case. Of course I was just joking about the nose heavy aspect of the design. In my case, with super skinny 155R13 tires, the only thing I had to worry about was terminal understeer, which was perfect for a 16 year old with a fresh license.

Ah yes the VW-Audi understeer. I remember driving a 1985 Quantum/Passat .... damn that thing did not like tight corners. Oddly enough later on we had a 1998 Jetta and that was actually pretty agile with the sporty package (not GLI just tighter suspension and better wheels/tires).

I went from that Dasher to a Rabbit GTI - night and day difference. Of course, understeer was still prevalent, but it was so much fun to toss around. Comparing a family wagon to a bit hatch isn’t exactly a fair comparison as they both did what they were supposed to do. I would spend Saturday nights zipping back and forth through local canyons for the sheer joy of it, and that car is the one that showed me that is rather have something that handled well rather than something that was only quick in a straight line.
The Dasher was not bad for what it was. I remember once having to drive my mom’s friend’s Pinto wagon, a car very similar to the Dasher. There was no comparison, and the feel of a German car is what kept me driving almost nothing else until I bought my Mazda in 2012.

You’re not wrong. Audi too stuck with a flawed drivetrain layout inherited from a 1940s Economy car (in this case the DKW F9 designed around a lightweight 3cyl two stroke engine )
