!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The biggest problem is the steady decline in quality which has tormented all of the blogs.  I rarely visit even Jalopnik anymore.  So many, like Deadspin, have abandoned their don't-take-yourself-too-seriously feel that made me go there in the first place to become political screeds.  Oh, well.

Why does the saying,

‘always in the shit, it’s just the depth that varies’,

come to mind.

They layed off too many staff, lost any quality that was there and now it’s treading water.

We really need to find an alternate ‘meet-up’ site if ever Oppo goes down so we can continue on...I don’t think we’ve ever finalized another option...

I don’t think we are going to find an alternative, which is a shame. I’m not joining reddit and I’m not using facebook. We had this same discussion back in 2011 or so during the mass exodus; G+ was choosen as the backup and you can see how that turned out.

In summary, the new guy is a bean counter.

He’s trying to catch the sites up to what worked in the past, while breaking the company culture, and not moving them towards what will work in the future.

The new group paid $50M? My prediction is that they will sell for half that in less than 2 yrs.

Medium is so annoying. Responses to articles are articles themselves. The platform works really well, but somehow Kinja has a better overall design for blogs and communities.

I've thought about building my own blog system (partly as a backup to Oppo and partly as a programming exercise), but with three young kids, it would be nearly impossible for me to find the time. That, and my JavaScript and CSS skills are... not great.
